Mount Nimham Fire Tower Rededication Ceremonies

Join us for the kick-off event of the
restoration of the fire tower
on Mount Nimham.

Join with your neighbors and friends from across the county as the Kent CAC (Conservation Advisory Committee) in conjunction with the NYS DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) begin restoration efforts for this important Putnam County landmark.

When the project is complete the public will again be able to enjoy the 75 mile views available to the observer on a clear day. Views that include the the City of New York, the Berkshires, the Catskills, Gunks and Marlboro Hills, the entierty of Putnam County and north to Stissing Mountain almost at the southern edge of Columbia County.

The following is a tentative schedule of the day's events:
12:30 P.M. Hike leaves the County Park A 2 mile hike to the Fire Tower site. The trail climbs rather steadily and is not suited for the out-of-shape!

Parking and shuttles will be provided at lots on Gipsy Trail and at the County Facility for people not wanting to make the hike.

Shuttles will run from 1PM until 2PM to bring people up from the parking areas and from 3:30 onwards to bring you back down.

2:00 P.M. Opening Ceremony.   The Nimham Singers of Putnam County, a native drumming circle led by Kent resident Gil Tarbox, will perform a Prayer song and the Presentation of the Colors.
2:15 P.M. Introductions and Opening Remarks - by George Baum, the chair of the Kent CAC and the Putnam County Environmental Management Committee.
2:30 P.M. A short presentation about the restoration of Fire Towers. George Porfos, who oversaw efforts to restore fire towers in the Catskill's Park, will share his experiences
2:35 P.M: The Nimham Singers of Putnam County will perform an Honor Song.
2:45 P.M. A Story for Children of All Ages will be told by Nancy Andrey.
3:00 P.M. A Sing-Along will be led by long time Putnam Valley residents and musicians John Cohen and Andrew Holland
3:30 P.M. Closing Drums performed by the Nimham Singers of Putnam County.
3:35 P.M. Return Hike down the mountain arriving and shuttle transportation for those requiring assistance.

Return Shuttles down the mountain to the parking lots.

In case of heavy rain the event will be held at an indoor location at the County Park
