Kent's 'panhandle'

Folks,

Western Kent has a panhandle, a chunk taken out of Philipstown at some point in the past that encompasses the area known as Hortowntown.

Early maps show Philipstown being more recatngularish from when it was divvied up among the Philipse Family. The 1892 USGS map shows the current westernmost line of Kent, the line that runs along the Philisptown Pike (Route 301) AND the *old* town line as well. That line is missing from the 1941 map which has the current town lines in position.

Questions:

1) When did Kent acquire Hortowntown and,
2) Why?

Note: No, I don't know the answers!

In the map above, the shaded area is the portion in question which
was once part of Philipstown but became part of Kent.... When?
Note the line along the eastern border where Philipstown *used* to end - why is it on this map?.
The original 1892 map with two borders!
Note how in this 1941 map that eastern border is now gone!
So, if you have any idea when, why, where and how please write!
