ARTS ON THE LAKE TIMELINE

The Lake Carmel Firehouse on Lake Carmel is emptied when the Fire Company moves to a new and larger firehouse opposite the Kent Town Center on Route 52, about a mile north of its previous firehouse – 2003.

A majority of Lake Carmel residents responding to a poll support the idea of the empty Firehouse becoming an Arts Center – 2004.

Residents Bonnie Eggena, Bob Rogers, Jean Ehenebuske, Wanda Schweitzer and Liz Allison prepare Arts on Lake Carmel proposal and establish artsonthelake.org website – Fall 2005.

The Kent Town Board votes to approve the concept of the Lake Carmel Firehouse becoming an Art Center – October 10, 2005.

A cross section of the community gathers on the 2nd Sunday in December to see the potential of the former firehouse and to express an interest in creating an arts center on the site. – December 11, 2005.

The Kent Town Board, with two new members, creates sub-committee consisting of Bob Rogers, Bob Bradley, Sheila Clarke, Ellen Leerburger, James Shearwood and Bill Ullman to prepare a mission statement for the art center – February 6, 2006.

The Kent Town Board accepts the sub-committee’s mission statement and directs Town Attorney to draft a contract so that Arts on the Lake, a not-for-profit corporation, can provide the services of an art center to area residents – April 3, 2006.

Arts on the Lake meets with Building Inspector, Fire Marshall and Architect to begin preparations for Certificate of Occupancy – April 28, 2006.

Arts on the Lake has first of several meetings with Supervisor Nordstrom and Attorney Curtiss to go over draft of proposed contract – May 12, 2006.

Arts on the Lake, with the assistance of Attorney Peter Collins, is incorporated as a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Corporation with the following officers: President Bob Rogers, Vice-President James Shearwood, Secretary Ellen Leerburger, Treasurer Bob Bradley and Board Member Liz Allison – May 21, 2006.

Area inmates, under the direction of Officer James See, work to complete renovation on the ground floor of the former firehouse that would be suitable to be used as a gallery and temporary performance space – July 2006.
