KENT – Putnam County’s on-again, off-again plans for a senior center in Kent are back on after county and state officials persuaded the state’s housing department to reinstate a $600,000 grant.
In September, the agency said the county missed its deadline to complete the project and, therefore, lost the money. But a new site for the center, which has been on the drawing board for almost three years, and the county’s commitment to pay for it have apparently persuaded the state to make the money available again.
That has Roy Albitz, 91, of Kent and his friends, who gather in part of Putnam County’s Office for the Aging off Old Route 6 in Carmel, looking forward to more progress. Kent and Carmel seniors share the space at the county’s Donald B. Smith campus, shoehorning themselves into the meeting room for daily lunches and other events. But there isn’t room for everybody.
“We have to make up a list a week or two before (special occasions). After that, we have to turn people away,” said Albitz, who has been coming to the Carmel center for 23 years.
