Greg Ball Advances to ‘On the Radar’ | Room Eight

Greg Ball Advances to ‘On the Radar’New York Candidate Takes First Step toward ‘Young Gun’ Status Washington- The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has officially announced Assemblyman Greg Ball, candidate in New York’s 19th congressional district, as an ‘On the Radar’ candidate, the first step of its Young Guns program. Founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by Reps. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Young Guns program is a member-driven organization dedicated to electing open-seat and challenger candidates nationwide. The Young Guns program is designed to assist Republican candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives to achieve goals and benchmarks throughout the election cycle focused on the fundamentals of a winning campaign. By achieving ‘On the Radar’ status, Ball has already proven his ability to build a successful campaign structure and achieve important fundraising goals. “The NRCC is committed to working with Greg Ball as he continues to meet the rigorous goals of the Young Guns program,” said NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions.

News That Matters – August 31, 2009

What happens when you mix a live performance with soprano Kristin Chenoweth, alto Patti Lupone, tenor Paul Groves(!) and baritone Sir Thomas Allen with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Marin Alsop and toss them all together into the middle of a Voltaire classic directed by Lonny Price? You get a concert version of Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide” good enough to convince you that opera, at least spoofs on opera, are true entertainment worth gathering the family and setting aside two hours for some knock-your-socks-off entertainment. Just watching Chenoweth toy with “Glitter and be Gay” is the worth the price of the Netflix rental alone and Groves’ long, lingering notes are, as a friend of mine would say, “to die for”. After viewing the DVD you will agree that this was the best of all possible worlds. [...]

Putnam seeks state’s OK to build Kent senior center Michael Risinit mrisinit@lohud.com

KENT – Putnam County’s plan to build a senior center off Ludingtonville Road in Kent is awaiting the permission of the state Legislature.

The approximately 1.6 wooded acres where the center would sit, next to Drew Lake and near Interstate 84, is designated as parkland. By law, county-owned public parkland can’t be used for other purposes unless the state Legislature signs off.

The Putnam Legislature recently passed a resolution to formally ask state lawmakers for that permission – one of the few remaining steps before a groundbreaking could be held, possibly as soon as this year.

Time to move past scare tactics | The Journal News

Time to move past scare tactics Dr. Daniel Fass

As the debate about health-care reform continues, gross misrepresentations of fact have supplanted intelligent discourse on the merits of the legislation working its way through Congress.

The most egregious of these distortions is the concept of government run “death panels” – government entities that would determine who receives life-prolonging treatment and who would be left to die, or, worse, put to death. While it is easy to dismiss former Gov. Sarah Palin’s rants against the “death panels” as the ramblings of an embarrassment to the electoral process, other notable figures have weighed in with similar missives.

The genesis of this Machiavellian fairy tale stems from a provision in HR 3200 that reimburses physicians if they provide end-of-life counseling. Those who are opposed to any change in our current insurance system have seized on this as evidence of sinister forces at work that plan to deny granny life-saving care in order to save the federal treasury [...]

Connecticut Public Funding Law Held Unconstitutional Because it Discriminates Severely Against Minor Parties & Independent Candidates

August 27th, 2009

On August 27, U.S. District Court Judge Stefan Underhill, a Clinton appointee, held that Connecticut’s public funding law for candidates is so discriminatory in favor of the two major parties, and against all other parties and candidates, that it is unconstitutional in its entirety. The opinion is 138 pages long. A link to the decision is found in this news story from Connecticut News Junkie. Thanks to Ken Krayeske for this news. The case is Green Party of Ct. v Garfield, 3:06cv1030. The Libertarian Party is a co-plaintiff.

Connecticut’s public funding law was passed in 2006 and used for the first time in 2008. Members of parties that polled 20% of the vote in the last election are entitled to public funding if they receive a certain number of qualifying contributions. Others must also obtain the qualifying contributions, but they need to submit a very large number of signatures, in addition.

The decision summarizes the problems with the law on page 71: “The CEP (Citizens Election Program) enhances the relative strength of major party candidates in ways that represent a [...]

News That Matters – August 28, 2009 – Things To Do Edition

Winter is coming on believe it or not and now is the time to begin weatherizing your home against the cold and to protect your pocketbook from what should be pretty expensive heating costs. Over the next few weeks I’ll be including some common-sense tips on what you should be doing now to get your place in shape. But one important and often over looked project is to refinish the outside of your home. Believe it or not, a good house painter will take the time to secure the outside of your home, re-caulk windows and doors and tighten up the external structure. If you’re living in an older home an investment in a good exterior paint job could save you money this winter. [...]

Mobile Homes in Mahopac Must Move | The Journal News

Barbara Livingston Nackman bnackman@lohud.com

MAHOPAC – Plans for a two-story retail and office building on Route 6 call for the elimination of a mobile home community that has more than a dozen residents, mostly retirees.

Residents of Knolls Trailer Court, across Route 6 from the Kmart shopping center, value the affordable residences in a convenient location. There are 14 lots on the site’s 3.6 acres off Cooney Road.

“I have no clue where I’d go if I do have to leave here,” said Joe Toleno, 63, a retired carpenter who has lived in the complex for 25 years. Toleno, commander of American Legion Post 1080 in Carmel, said many residents are Legion members and veterans.

This is one of two mobile home communities in Carmel and five in Putnam County. With rents under $700 a month for a trailer lot, the site is one of the lowest-priced living options available.
