Walkway Over The Hudson – Opening Day Weekend – October 2, 2009

Walkway Over The Hudson Schedule of events For Opening Day Weekend

Walkway Over the Hudson officially opens to the public at 3 p.m. Oct. 3.

Friday, Oct. 2

• 7-10 p.m. Grand Illumination of the Walkway; 1,000 paper lanterns carried by volunteers on the bridge, River of Light Promenade, light exhibition, hot air balloon display and fireworks.

Saturday, Oct. 3

• 9-11 a.m. Marist College Crew recreates the famed Poughkeepsie Regatta, between Rogers Point and the Mid-Hudson Bridge.

• 11 a.m. Formal opening ceremony with remarks by Gov. David Paterson. Invitation only.

• Noon-6 p.m. Clearwater Music Festival at Waryas Park, City of Poughkeepsie.

• Noon-6 p.m. One River, Many Streams Arts Festival presented by the Dutchess County Arts Council at Waryas Park, City of Poughkeepsie.

• Noon-6 p.m. River cruises leaving from Waryas Park.

• Noon-6 p.m. Highland HudsonFest, a street fair on Main Street and Vineyard Avenue in Highland.

• 1 p.m. Throwing open the gates by Dutchess County Executive William Steinhaus and Ulster County Executive Michael Hein.

• 1 p.m. Tying the Knot ceremony.

• 1:30 p.m. Walking on Air parade. Puppet procession.

• 2:30 p.m. Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome flyover.

• 3 p.m. Walkway is officially open to the public.

• 5-9 p.m. Night circus, light show and airwave dances. All attending are asked to wear glow-in-the-dark accessories or bring glow sticks.

• 6-10 p.m. Block party on Vineyard Avenue in Highland. Music and food.

Sunday, Oct. 4

• 8 a.m. Rooftops to Treetops: 5-kilometer run sponsored by Mid-Hudson Roadrunners.

• Noon-6 p.m. River cruises leaving from Highland Landing Park.

• Official opening of the Walkway Loop Trail. Residents can walk from Waryas Park in the City of Poughkeepsie, across the Mid-Hudson Bridge, then onto Haviland Road in Highland and head back on the Walkway.
