Due diligence on water supply

January 6, 2010

Amid all the holiday hubbub, it might have been easy to miss the news that two different governmental agencies weighed in on the state Department of Environmental Conservation's draft proposal to regulate natural gas drilling upstate — an endeavor that has blinded many stakeholders with dollar signs. Wisely, each agency urged that the state tighten its proposed regulations, saying that the safety of human health, the environment and the water supply depended upon it.

The time period for the public to comment on the book-length proposed regulations has now closed; we hope the DEC is taking those very serious concerns to heart as it puts together the final regulations that will determine if and how natural gas is allowed to be extracted from the gas-rich underground rock formation known as the Marcellus Shale.
