Gunfire Ensues After Putnam Valley Accident; Pair Arrested
Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrests of two Putnam Valley residents for their role in a bizarre incident in which a firearm was discharged following a car accident.
On December 28, 2009 at 3:39 p.m., Deputy Sheriffs Robert Detlefs and Bryan Suppa responded to a 911 report of a personal injury automobile accident on Oscawana Heights Road in the Town of Putnam Valley. While enroute, the deputies received a 911 report of three occupants fleeing the scene of the accident on foot. The deputies received an additional 911 broadcast that one of the subjects was at a local residence, was armed with a firearm and that shots had been fired.
Upon arrival, the deputies secured the scene and were successful in locating the driver and occupants involved in the accident. The driver, identified as Clay Bellamy, 45, of 15 Oscawana Heights Road, Putnam Valley was determined to have returned to his residence, retrieved a shotgun and discharged one shot into the air. The deputies recovered the firearm and a spent shell at the scene. Mr. Bellamy was charged with Illegal Discharge of a Firearm, Prohibited Use of a Weapon and Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, misdemeanors. Mr. Bellamy was subsequently transported to Putnam Hospital Center and was admitted. He will be required to appear in the Town of Putnam Valley Justice Court to answer the charges on January 7, 2010.
A passenger in the vehicle, identified as Christine M. Treadwell, 44, of 10 Oscawana Heights Road, Putnam Valley was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct, a violation, and with Resisting Arrest, a misdemeanor, after she became combative with deputies at the scene. Ms. Treadwell was arraigned before Town of Putnam Valley Justice Louis DiCarlo and was committed to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500.00 cash bail or $1,000.00 bond pending a January 14, 2010 appearance in the Town of Putnam Valley Justice Court to answer the charges. The third reported subject was not injured and was not charged criminally.
Sheriff Smith praised the response of his deputies, noting that the situation could have rapidly deteriorated if not for the deputies’ efficient actions at the scene.
If found guilty of the misdemeanor charges, the defendants could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.00. All defendants are presumed to be innocent until found guilty in a court of law. ####
