Party politics poisons process

January 7, 2010

George Washington in his farewell address warned against factious political parties. He advised citizens to consider each political issue by itself, not as part of a party package deal.

In present terms, the stock market has nothing to do with abortion; gay demands do not parallel abolition of protective tariffs; legalizing marijuana has no real connection with forbidding U.S. banks to sell mortgages overseas; and universal health insurance should not be in the same box with government limits on the bonuses of CEOs accepting federal bailouts.

Both Democrats and Republicans in their shortsighted greed helped set the stage for the recession we now suffer, undoing the New Deal. Individuals with labels like conservative or liberal on closer inspection often are as phony as cast-iron balloons.

Those who view health insurance reform as socialism should voluntarily quit their lifetime federal health insurance as members of Congress, or quit complaining. Those who want an extension of war in Afghanistan should approve higher taxes to pay for it. Those who oppose expanded federal aid to the unemployed should offer the unemployed their jobs.

When all but one member of the Republicans in the House vote in unity, one wonders how many think for themselves. If Democrats genuinely wish to put the brakes on illegal immigration, let them enforce the federal minimum wage and maximum-hours laws so often violated in treatment of illegals.

Those who view their party incapable of error on any issue do us all, including themselves, a great disservice.
