PEEKSKILL — Dozens of enthusiastic volunteers showed up at St. Peter's Episcopal Church last weekend to help kick off a new “choice” food pantry in the city.
Fred's Food Pantry, a program started by Caring for the Homeless of Peekskill, or CHOP, in collaboration with St. Peter's, will allow people in need to hand-select a variety of foods, including fresh produce and meats. The pantry is an alternative to the prepared bags of groceries typically distributed at food pantries.
“This is more dignified,” said Jeanne Blum, CHOP's executive director. “This provides them an opportunity to choose foods that are best for their families.”
