Welcome!

Welcome to News That Matters

If I were a better writer and could match the skills of even the most middling of authors, life in Putnam County, New York would make quite excellent reading. But so few publishers would believe what I had written as genuine they’d have to place my book in the fiction section of bookstores and the fantasy section of libraries. But I can assure you that what we experience here as residents is real and genuine even though it reads – and too often feels – as if we’re living in a 1950’s Central American Banana Republic. In only a very few other places around the world, perhaps in one of those central Asian “stans” no one can pronounce, could we write about the depths of malfeasance that passes for government in our bucolic 240 square miles. If Voltaire or Shalom Aleichem were alive today even they could not have surpassed the fantastical mysteries and ironies that abound in our every day lives.

In these pages and posts I will try to bring you a taste of what it’s like to live here. There are joys and good things happening here too: We have an active and growing arts and theater community and thanks to our state parks and the NYCDEP we have tens of thousands of acres of open space lands to hike, bike, ride and explore. So, read what’s posted here or click on the “News That Matters” tab above for, well, the news that matters.

PlanPutnam was created to serve the people of our region information regarding over development and sprawl.

With the ever increasing traffic and congestion, light, noise, water and air pollution that threatens us each day as the megalopolis south of us creeps ever northward, the people of Putnam County need a place they can go to learn how to push back – to stop the sprawl. If Putnam County is “where the country begins” maybe we ought to preserve some of that country.

You should really think about doing a stand-up improv at Arts on the  Lake some time. You have a unique way of making humor out of the some of the dumbest and crazy things happening both locally and globally. – Bill Volkmann

“The highlands of Putnam County need to be protected at all costs. If we do nothing, our children may never know the wonder of discovery. Yet, if we act with creativity, intelligence and care, we may offer our beloved hills to the future as we have come to know and love them. Anything less is a crime.” JmG
