Carmel schools budget cuts 47.5 positions | LoHud.com

PATTERSON โ€” The Carmel school district’s 2010-11 budget calls for cutting the equivalent of 47.5 full-time positions with about 30 of those teachers or teaching assistants.

Schools Superintendent James Ryan said about a third of those classroom-based jobs will be eliminated through retirements. With about $1.6 million less in state aid expected in the next school year, compared to this year, and increasing pension and retirement costs, preparing the new budget was difficult, he said during a recent presentation at Matthew Paterson Elementary School. Ryan said having the district operate next year at 2009-10 levels wasn’t feasible.

The 2010-11 budget carries a 4.31 percent tax-levy increase. Spending would increase 1.79 percent to $105,991,161, from $104,124,361 this year.

Ryan said the district was discussing salary freezes with its unions. Should every employee, including himself, forgo an increase in the 2010-11 school year, he would recommend eliminating layoffs. In Brewster, the teachers association earlier this year approved a contract that included a salary freeze for next school year and an increase in their health-care contributions.

News That Matters – April 14, 2010

Action Update: For those who would like to see a little justice in our fair county there is still time to help us get the charges leveled against Carmel resident Lori Kemp dropped and our letter writing campaign to District Attorney Adam Levy is in full swing. If you have not yet written (why is that?) there’s some good information and a sample letter here in a post called, “How You Can Help Lori Kemp” which has had more than 100 visits in the past few days! News That Matters – April 12, 2010

The countdown to Thursday’s Tea Bagger rally in Carmel is well underway as part time Assemblyman and full time demagogue, Greg “Lock and Load” Ball, and his hired gang of outside agitators, bring their obsolete and un-thought out ideas to the steps of the County courthouse. I have a list of scheduled speakers here somewhere but it’s the same old, same old group of “we’ve heard it all before’s”, nothing new to say, no actual solutions, hot air blowing politicians and politician wannabees. And no, they won’t let Jeff Green speak. What’s with that? [...]

News That Matters – February 15, 2010

The problem in the end may be that those who like the skies dark at night may viewed as “those intellectuals” or, “those people hate children!” as we hear the sports mafias intone until we’re ready to puke. But to vilify someone for wanting the skies dark, which may be the reason they moved here in the first place, is unfair and unjust. That the skies have been dark this long should speak to all of us. To make a change such as this is a decision that should not be based on brawn but on brains. And mark my words: it’s not about the children. [...]

News That Matters – February 8,2010

2010 is going to be an interesting year for politics in Putnam County. The sides are lining up for a couple of Legislative seats and the race for the County Executive’s seat. On the legislative side the Republican machine is gunning to shoot down one of its own, Tony Fusco, trying to remove the one guy who does what a decent legislator should be doing: asking questions and demanding answers. In another race, Maryellen O’Dell, who has been a supporter of sales tax increases and other “fees” to keep the county afloat, may also be facing a primary challenge and we’ll know for certain in a month or two. [...]

News That Matters – January 25, 2010 – The Patriot Edition

A poll released on Friday shows that Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee holds a slim lead in a potential 2012 race against Barack Obama. Huckabee leads by 45%-44%. Mitt Romney trails slightly, by 42%-44% for Obama and Obama leads Sarah Palin by 49%-41% though she is the most well liked Republican of respondents. This shows the American people are onto the President and the Democrats and that come 2012 this nightmare will be over and America will once again gain prominence in the world. [...]

News That Matters – January 13, 2010

In yesterday’s edition of the New York Journal News they ran 5 full pages of incidences from police reports. Imagine how different our communities would be if they ran 5 full pages of the positive things we do, our successes? Graduations, accomplishments, births, projects completed… There is more to life than drunk drivers and wasteful small-time marijuana arrests. What good things have you done that should be in the news? [...]
