Greg then asked Supervisor Rights if he was still planning to donate $10,000 to the Library. Rights f-i-n-a-l-l-y admitted that the cuts in his salary would be his $10,000 contribution. Oh really Supervisor? You honestly think you get to earmark where the non-voluntary cuts on your salary line are distributed? Really? By the way, don’t even think about deducting this on your 2010 income taxes. [...]

Mr. Bondi’s High Horse Posted by: “Lynne Eckardt” lynne.eckardt@gmail.com Date: Wed Jun 9, 2010 12:25 pm ((PDT)) Hi All, After reading Mike Risinit’s article regarding County Executive Bondi’s take on the County/Town landfill closures I decided it was time to do a little more research. After all, these landfill closures seem to have been dragging on ad infinitum. Besides Mr. Bondi was really on his high horse when he wrote a four page opus to the County Legislature and the Southeast Town Board which could kinda, sorta be described as a full blown hissy-fit complete with several over-the-top rhetorical questions. *Landfill History:* Anyhow, the first article I located re the county dump was from September 3rd, 2008. NB the *bolding* is mine. In this piece the county was fined $55,000 for various and sundry *’longstanding environmental’ violations at county facilities. Included in these violations was the county landfill which, according to the article and a 1991 DEC report, was leaching a “reddish,- brown liquid containing, among other things, toluene and phenol- toxic solvents that are potent cancer causing organic compounds.”* Yeah, I had to read it twice as well: ‘potent cancer-causing organic compounds’. Yum. Also keep in [...]
I’ve given up trying to be a Republican. No matter how hard I tried I could not convince myself that corporate greed was a good thing, that war is necessary and that it’s not the responsibility of common citizens to take care of each other. [...]
Action Update: For those who would like to see a little justice in our fair county there is still time to help us get the charges leveled against Carmel resident Lori Kemp dropped and our letter writing campaign to District Attorney Adam Levy is in full swing. If you have not yet written (why is that?) there’s some good information and a sample letter here in a post called, “How You Can Help Lori Kemp” which has had more than 100 visits in the past few days! [...]
Mark Anderson made several suggestions, including consolidating school districts, and taking zoning and planning power away from towns and villages and putting it in the hands of the county. KC Anderson. suggested that public transportation be expanded and improved, and Mark Anderson suggested that county services be clustered around what little public transport we had. [...]
Yeah, I’ve been away for a lot of reasons that only a few of you have asked about until a wonderful event, an 80th birthday party for longtime Kent resident Kathy Freston last Wednesday evening, when a number of people got on my case – and in my face – about not publishing News That Matters. And then over this past weekend I received a number of emails asking what’s happened. If you’ve written or called you know. If you haven’t, then you haven’t missed the column. [...]
SE Planning Board Recap 3/22/10
Posted by: “Lynne Eckardt” lynne.eckardt@gmail.com

Hi All,
Even though I still attend almost every Planning Board meeting I haven’t
tackled a recap for quite a while but this one is really too good or bad
(depending on your bent) to pass up.
Chairman LaPerch was in fine form having the patience of a toddler at
a Toys-R-Us clearance. And long time Planning Board member, Dan
Armstrong, had the unmitigated gall to claim he had no idea what the term
‘spot zoning’ means. Really, Dan? Really?
Of course while much has changed since the days of Chairman George Rohrman
much has remained the same. In general the Board has still never met a new
warehouse or old auto/tractor dealer/service center- (oops, make that
‘General Business’) it didn’t like. In fact the complex contortions made to
accommodate Brewster Honda make Houdini look like a piker. More on that
later.
On item 1 (‘Palumbo Sand and Gravel’) Peder Scott appeared to have won his
engineering degree in a raffle and Chairman LaPerch gave him an appropriate
and much needed dressing down. Baroody (scaled back to one lot) is finally

Southeast needs to weigh in on taking Putnam's trash | LoHud.com
SOUTHEAST — Take our trash, please. That's the call to the Town of Southeast from Putnam County, now that the county Legislature has approved trucking Putnam's trash to Southeast's soon-to-be-capped landfill.
As part of the proposed deal, the county would pay Southeast $254,000 and provide $777,766 in services to help it incorporate Putnam's municipal and commercial trash into its landfill.
The Southeast Town Board still needs to approve the 21-page agreement as both work under a state order to close their former dumps.
Town and county officials, as well as their consultants and state environmental officials, are expected to meet this month to review the agreement.
“The county's draft provides an excellent springboard for discussion regarding consolidation. Negotiations are ongoing,” Southeast Supervisor Michael Rights said.
