Yo Wait! Before we do, remember that New York gave Verizon permission to raise their rates recently because they had lost business to their competition. So, rather than improve service and attract more customers in that good old American Capitalist way, they went begging to the State and the State said, “yeah, sure.” And keep in mind that an increase in the basic rate (which was $2 a month per line) also represents an increase in sales tax receipts for the state. “I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.” – Douglas Adams
Good Monday Morning,
My propane company (Burnwell) just delivered 85 gallons of propane and billed me $6.039 per gallon plus a $9.99 “admin fee”. Plus taxes, the total bill was $524.15. The bill says they made the delivery on December 23rd but they left no receipt of any kind, at least non that I saw.
Last summer I asked Burnwell to deliver only when I call for a delivery so I have a call in for them to come and take their latest 85 gallons out of the tank. Being that the tank is 250 gallons and I assume the meter on the truck stops when the tank registers as full, that should leave me 165 gallons which is plenty until I can afford to get more. Does anyone want to take bets on what they’ll do? Does Putnam County have a consumer service division or ombudsman?
Senator Vincent Leibell is hosting – at his taxpayer funded Senate website – a political effort to get you to sign a petition to create a state constitutionally enforced spending cap. [...]
SOUTHEAST — A former Putnam County sheriff candidate who pleaded guilty to forging signatures on campaign paperwork said Wednesday that his proposal to perform community service by volunteering for Assemblyman Greg Ball was rejected because Ball is unpopular among some county Republicans.
“If it was a different politician, I think the people would say differently,” Andrew DeStefano said in reference to Putnam County District Attorney Adam Levy's office.
DeStefano of Patterson made his comments outside Southeast Town Court, where earlier a town justice told him that volunteering in Ball's office would be unsuitable. DeStefano dropped out of the sheriff's race in early September and pleaded guilty later that month after prosecutors said he forged signatures on nominating petitions he then filed with the county Board of Elections.

The YMCA of Western Connecticut is selling off their Great Hollow Wilderness Center which consists of 896 acres of open space, cliffs, waterfalls, fields and streams. It also adjoins the Walter G. Merritt property in Putnam County and was once part of that historical farm. Is there a buyer out there for this most important land? The image to the right, assuming your email program shows it, is a picture of a bobcat spotted there in October of this year. The property also protects the headwaters of some of the cleanest waters entering the Great Swamp in Patterson. It would be a shame to have it subdivided and paved over with McMansions. [...]
It’s going to cost a little more to provide for your traditional Christmas this year than it has in the past. In fact, it’s going to set you back some $21,465.56, a 1.8% increase over last year. There are some bright spots however: The 6 geese a laying cost $240 last year but only $150 this year. On the other hand, your three french hens increased by 50% from $30 last year to $45 this year. But those twelve lords a’ leaping? Wow! They don’t come cheap, at $4413 for the ten. The nine ladies dancing however, will set you back $5473, the most expensive item the list. You can see the full results here. [...]
Wednesday’s News That Matters will combine news and events for next weekend so if you’ve got something going on you want your fellow readers to know about please get it in pretty quick. I can’t post on Friday as it’s the traditional MAD DASH TO THE MALL DAY and I aim to be sitting in traffic, burning fossil fuels, contributing my share of greenhouse gases to global warming while waiting my turn to see Santa and give him my wish list and rudely jostle millions of fellow mall-goers forcing my way past them for that sale at Banana Republic. Honestly, how the heck are the reindeer going to fare after the ice melts? [...]
Assemblyman Greg Ball is in the news again. No, it’s not for his record in Albany (of which there is none) but for a recent press release claiming that the government’s plan to hold a trial for 9/11 defendants in NYC is a bad idea. Citing the threat of terror attacks, he claims that the world – as we know it – will end if the trials in New York move forward. He goes so far as to blame an earlier trial of those who attempted to blow up the World Trade Center with the 9/11 events. He then agrees that “civilian courts are no place to try terrorists.” If not there, then where? Are we not a nation of law? A writer to the NYJN Letters section this morning said we should try them by military tribunal then shoot them. Last time I looked this was not Saudi Arabia or Yemen or Syria. I guess she likes those places and desires us to be more like them. [...]
