Foraging with the “Wildman”

“Wildman” Steve Brill has 29 years of experience in nature walking and eating foods from the great outdoors. Brill has come full circle in his career: he once was arrested for eating a dandelion in Central Park, and later on, he ended up working with Central Park by educating students on edible foods.

Swathed in head-to-toe protective gear, from safari hat to white socks pulled over his cargo pants (to keep the ticks away), Brill led Chong- Jimenez and the rest of the troupe down the main hill at Huntington and began with the first edible find of the day: wood sorrell.

“Wood sorrell has three leaves that look like hearts,” Brill said, handing his find to the children gathered around him. “This tastes like lemon.”

He explained that it is important to leave the roots of wild plants so they will grow back again. This concept of "eco-foraging" is an important part of the Brill tour –he continually reminds his students never to take the last of a wild plant, and to let alone important parts of the plants so that they will flourish again in the next growing season. Overall, Brill emphasizes minimal impact on the [...]

Woman sets Appalachian Trail fastest-hike record – New Jersey Herald

Jennifer Pharr Davis set the unofficial record for the fastest hike of the entire Appalachian Trail, yet she said she never ignored the beauty of the 2,180-mile trek from Maine to Georgia.

She saw 36 bears, moose, porcupines and just about every sunrise and sunset during her journey, which lasted exactly 46 days, 11 hours, and 20 minutes since she left Mount Katahdin in Maine on June 16.

"Fastest is so relative," Davis said Tuesday after estimating she had slept about 30 of the past 48 hours. "My average was 3 mph. So what are you not going to see at 3 mph?"

She emerged from the woods Sunday with her husband by her side and walked to the granite slab on Springer Mountain in Georgia at the trail’s southern end. There cheering for her were her parents and dozens of other family members and friends.

"There were a lot of tears. Everyone was like, ‘Are those happy tears?’ I just said they’re everything tears. I’m so happy. In a way, I’m sad it’s over. I’m tired. It was just like every emotion was coming out at once," said Davis, 28.

A $250,000 upgrade to the geyser area of Saratoga Spa State Park means that the only spouting geyser east of the Mississippi, barely a trickle due to built-up mineral deposits a year ago, is again a major tourist attraction. “We are so appreciative to our community leaders who stepped forward to restore some of our [...] [...]
