Putnam County exec eyes veto of sales-tax reduction legislation | The Journal News | LoHud.com

CARMEL — Putnam County Executive Paul Eldridge may veto a measure that forces the county to wean itself off a dependence on its increased sales-tax rate with surplus sales-tax money.

Eldridge said erasing the extra point of sales tax Putnam is allowed to collect each year could place a greater burden on property taxes. But the legislator that sponsored the measure, which was recently passed by a 6-2 vote, characterized the county executive’s concern as a "false choice."

News That Matters – Wednesday, April 27, 2011

nan_portrait1_258x259[1]

In a speech to the Ripon Society, Congresswoman Nan Hayworth said that the British system of national health care will not work here, “because the British are actually willing to sit patiently in line.” Her implication, I assume, means that we should pay whatever it takes to continue giving Americans instant gratification and that seems to be the basis for the Republican party’s take on all things American. Are we really that self-centered and ego-centric as a nation? If so, that explains why people keep wanting to blow us up. [...]

Roger Ailes Caught Spying on the Reporters at His Small-Town Newspaper

Lindsley agreed to stay on through the end of April for a lengthy transition period, and Roger’s behavior during that transition–including having him followed–suggest that a deep rift had emerged. At some point during the first week of April, Lindsley abruptly cut his transition short and quit outright, as did two of his young reporters, T.J. Haley and Carli-Rae Panny. [...]

Two-Hundred and fifty-five members of Congress chose to ignore overwhelming scientific evidence that our burning of fossil fuels at the rate we’re burning them is over-heating the atmosphere and leading to a climate imbalance that is raising the overall temperature of the planet and all in an effort to increase profits for, well, you guessed it, the profiteers and shareholders of the very companies that are slowly killing us and destroying the planet. $1M Carmel suit claims assessor creates hostile workplace | The Journal News | lohud.com

CARMEL — Carmel Town Hall off McAlpin Avenue is a tempest of threatening and childish behavior stirred by the town’s gun-toting assessor, according to a recently filed lawsuit.

In the suit, Eileen Brennan, the town’s account clerk, details what she claims is a hostile work environment perpetuated by Assessor Paul Jonke. Jonke, she said, yells in Town Hall, has carried a gun to work and filed a false sexual-harassment complaint against her. She is seeking $1 million in total damages from both him and the town for enduring his behavior.

A Long Island-based lawyer representing Jonke and the town noted the suit was not a verified complaint, meaning it was signed only by Brennan’s attorney and not by Brennan, who would do so under the penalty of perjury, he claimed. Attorney Michael Miranda all but called the suit a work of fiction. It was filed early in March in state Supreme Court in Carmel.

Last week I wrote about how Congresswoman Nan Hayworth took the side of corporate America when faced with the question of what she would do about major corporations that paid no income taxes. It seems that companies like GE, who earned $14.2 billion last year with $5.1 billion of that coming from US earnings, paid $0 in taxes. And who did Barack Obama select to head his Council on Jobs and Competitiveness? GE’s Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt. It’s better than a fox in a hen house. And you know, now that Congress *and* the President are both in lock-step (or is that goose-step?) with the Corporations it’s only going to get worse. [...]
