Last week I wrote about how Congresswoman Nan Hayworth took the side of corporate America when faced with the question of what she would do about major corporations that paid no income taxes. It seems that companies like GE, who earned $14.2 billion last year with $5.1 billion of that coming from US earnings, paid $0 in taxes. And who did Barack Obama select to head his Council on Jobs and Competitiveness? GE’s Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt. It’s better than a fox in a hen house. And you know, now that Congress *and* the President are both in lock-step (or is that goose-step?) with the Corporations it’s only going to get worse. [...]

New York City Department of Environmental Protection proposes stormwater improvements at the Sycamore Park parking facility in the Town of Carmel in Putnam County. The proposed project includes the conversion of the existing gravel parking lot to smaller, paved parking spaces and two “overflow” grassed parking lots. Stormwater treatment will include the installation of two biofiltration areas to collect and treat runoff from the paved areas as well as a vegetated drainage swale. The existing clogged culvert will be cleared of debris and the culvert length reduced to restore open channel flow. In total, 1.66 acres of the adjacent area of New York State regulated Freshwater Wetland LC-22 (Class 1) will be temporarily impacted by the project. Leibell sentencing postponed

WHITE PLAINS – The sentencing of former state Senator Vincent Leibell of Putnam County has been pushed back one month.
Leibell, who pled guilty in December to obstructing a federal grand jury that was investigating whether he had extorted cash payments from lawyers working in Putnam county and to failing to report on his income tax returns tens of thousands of dollars in cash payments he had received from those lawyers, was supposed to be sentenced in White Plains federal court on Monday, March 7.
The case has been postponed until April 1.

In other words, Putnam County government is bereft of a single progressive idea nor do they have any desire whatsoever to make county government smaller, less intrusive in our lives and cut spending to make life more bearable for the 100,000 people who live here. CARMEL — Should the state not re-approve a 1 percentage point bump in Putnam County’s sales tax rate, the county may be forced to scrap road patrols by sheriff’s deputies, emergency medical services such as Advanced Life Support and other measures, Legislature Chairman Vincent Tamagna said Wednesday.
County lawmakers expect to soon ask the state Legislature for permission to keep its portion of the sales tax at 4 percent instead of 3 percent. The extra point nets the county about $11 million annually and the levy expires in November. Requesting its reauthorization could set up a showdown with state Sen. Greg Ball, R-Carmel, who opposed the measure as an assemblyman. Without that revenue, Tamagna said, the county will be forced to consider “drastic cuts or a high increase in property taxes.” The money pays for discretionary spending, he said.

CARMEL — John Tully, who served as deputy Putnam County executive under Robert Bondi and left county government last year in anticipation of a new administration, will return to his old slot on Feb. 1.
County Executive Paul Eldridge today announced that Tully would fill the slot that has been empty since his resignation in September. At the time, then-state Sen. Vincent Leibell and county Legislator Mary Ellen Odell were vying for Bondi’s job. Leibell won the election but never took office following his conviction on two federal corruption charges in December. Eldridge was appointed county executive on Jan. 1 for a one-year term.
