News That Matters – March 29, 2010

Yeah, I’ve been away for a lot of reasons that only a few of you have asked about until a wonderful event, an 80th birthday party for longtime Kent resident Kathy Freston last Wednesday evening, when a number of people got on my case – and in my face – about not publishing News That Matters. And then over this past weekend I received a number of emails asking what’s happened. If you’ve written or called you know. If you haven’t, then you haven’t missed the column. [...]

News That Matters – February 15, 2010

The problem in the end may be that those who like the skies dark at night may viewed as “those intellectuals” or, “those people hate children!” as we hear the sports mafias intone until we’re ready to puke. But to vilify someone for wanting the skies dark, which may be the reason they moved here in the first place, is unfair and unjust. That the skies have been dark this long should speak to all of us. To make a change such as this is a decision that should not be based on brawn but on brains. And mark my words: it’s not about the children. [...]

Lake Carmel House Fire

According to the NYJN, a home on Lakeshore Drive in Lake Carmel burned early this morning. Firefighters had to cut a hole in the ice of the lake to get water to fight it. No injuries were reported.

News That Matters – January 25, 2010 – The Patriot Edition

A poll released on Friday shows that Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee holds a slim lead in a potential 2012 race against Barack Obama. Huckabee leads by 45%-44%. Mitt Romney trails slightly, by 42%-44% for Obama and Obama leads Sarah Palin by 49%-41% though she is the most well liked Republican of respondents. This shows the American people are onto the President and the Democrats and that come 2012 this nightmare will be over and America will once again gain prominence in the world. [...]

News That Matters – January 15, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Lake Carmel is going to be listed as “Impaired” in the next DEC rating for waterbodies in the State of New York. It’s a sensitive subject with the folk in that community. As I found doing my work with the town’s Stormwater committee and even more difficult during the last campaign, the people in Lake Carmel look out across the water and think it’s all good and dandy. The Town says they’re spending all kinds of money on cleaning up the lake and point to riprap here and a gate valve at the dam there or the cost of filling the lake with carp that eat the algae that’s in there. In the end, it’s all cosmetic so I’ll say it here and take the heat: [...]

News That Matters – January 13, 2010

In yesterday’s edition of the New York Journal News they ran 5 full pages of incidences from police reports. Imagine how different our communities would be if they ran 5 full pages of the positive things we do, our successes? Graduations, accomplishments, births, projects completed… There is more to life than drunk drivers and wasteful small-time marijuana arrests. What good things have you done that should be in the news? [...]

State almost finished with Kent gas station cleanup | LoHud.com | The Journal News

KENT — While the cold weather has slowed the progress of contractors removing polluted soil from the site of a former service station in Kent, it has also kept sediment and other materials from washing off the site and into nearby Lake Carmel, a state spokeswoman said.

The contractors are expected to scoop about 1,000 cubic yards of soil from the property on Route 52. Some in town say the tarps covering the already removed soil in an effort to keep it in place aren't adequate and the piles' proximity to the lake poses a threat. The excavation work began last month and trucks started hauling the soil away last week.

“They were doing the work, and the tarps came off the top (of the piles) and they were exposed,” said Wanda Schweitzer, chairwoman of the Lake Carmel Park District Advisory Committee.
