MAHOPAC — Police have made two more arrests in a Jeep-racing incident in the Mahopac Village Shopping Center lot in which one driver was earlier charged with narrowly missing a pedestrian and striking support columns in front of an A&P supermarket.

The race took place about 8 p.m. May 20 in the shopping plaza off Route 6 near the Westchester County line.

Carmel police Chief Michael Johnson said officers responded after witnesses called to report the race. One driver lost control and went up on the sidewalk in front of the supermarket.

The three drivers fled, but one, Richard Tota, 19, of Baldwin Place, returned and was arrested.

News That Matters – February 19, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Good Friday Morning,

Quick Poll Results:

In this unscientific poll with a margin of error exceeding 130%, we asked who your preference would be for County Executive. The names that appeared were either those who have been talked about or came in via your nominations and each voter saw them in a random order. Here are the results:

Jeff Green 43% Other (see below) 17% Vincent Leibell 13% Chris Leiberman 7% Dan Birmingham 7% Robert Bondi 7% Vincent Tamagna 7% Denis Sant 0% Tony Hay 0% Sheriff Donald Smith 0%

Under “Other”, each of the following received one vote: Sarah Casey (I think her mom voted for her), Pedro (who we know is Peter Hansen), Ken Harper, John Degnan and Sam Oliverio.

If the election were held today and only News That Matters readers voted, I’d be the dude on the top floor of the County Office Building for the next few years. I can see Messers. Camarda, Santucci and Lepler having a hard time swallowing that but it wouldn’t be so bad! A populist libertarian like myself is just what this county needs. More of the same old crap is what we don’t need. [...]

Lawsuit continues over arts center in Mahopac | LoHud.com

MAHOPAC — The Putnam Arts Council is days away from moving into its rebuilt home on Kennicut Hill Road in Mahopac, three years after a fire heavily damaged its building there.

But as it readies itself for watercolor, pottery and printmaking classes, the organization is still battling in court about the Belle Levine Arts Center's existence among the homes above Bucks Hollow Road. Neighbor John Molloy, who unsuccessfully brought a lawsuit against the arts council and the Carmel zoning board last year for allowing the rebuilding to proceed, is continuing his fight in a state appeals court.

Molloy argued in 2009 that the center's property has been residentially zoned since 1955, 13 years before the council formally acquired the land. He said, its commercial use of the land is illegal, and the zoning board's decision to grant the council a use variance was incorrect.

“The fact is they haven't been legal since 1968. The argument hasn't changed,” Molloy, an attorney, said Friday.

In May, state Supreme Court Justice Andrew O'Rourke disagreed with Molloy and supported the zoning decision. Molloy in January filed an appeal with the the Appellate Division's Second [...]

Hudson Valley Congressman Maurice Hinchey has been working on a bill that would add protections to historic and environmental sites in the Valley through the creation of a new National Park. Not only would this benefit the environmental concerns we have but would also be a huge boost to tourism and thus sustainable job creation. You can read his comments here. The first step in this process is a Federal feasibility study to which the Congressman addresses his remarks and is concerned with HR4003. [...]

Mahopac businessman establishes exploratory committee in NY-19

MAHOPAC – Putnam County businessman Thomas DeChiaro Wednesday announced that he has set up an exploratory committee for the 19th Congressional District. He is a Republican.

The only announced GOP candidate to challenge Democratic incumbent John Hall is Nan Hayworth.

DeChiaro, 47, who owns the Winery at St. George in Westchester County, said the Republican Party needs to “restore a voice to the underrepresented majority, here in the Hudson Valley, who are eager for leaders who will control the growth of government, and ensure that efforts to stimulate our economy go hand in hand with tangible job growth.”

DeChiaro said the American family is “under assault by a government that refused to listen to them.”

The former IBM’er said the US is “in jeopardy of losing our leadership position in the global economy.”

Home sales are down in the region of late and people have decided to stay to await for either an improvement in the market or genuine property tax relief from the state. Rumor has it I’ll be running for Supervisor of the Town of Kent in 2011. I heard that the other day – from the current Supervisor – who said she’d heard it from someone else. Well, whoever is spreading that rumor should let me know about it, don’t you think?

The Putnam Valley Farmer’s Market reminds you that today is your last chance at getting some hand-crafted, locally produced gifts for friends and family. The Market is open today from 3-7PM at the Lake Peekskill Community Center.

The weather report for the holiday weekend is mixed. Look for rain/freezing rain late on Christmas Day and into Boxing Day on the 26th. Please, drive carefully!

Judge’s order puts Mahopac commuter lot on hold | The Journal News

Judge’s order puts Mahopac commuter lot on hold Barbara Livingston Nackman bnackman@lohud.com

CARMEL – A state Supreme Court judge has ordered work to stop on a 60-space, commuter park-and-ride lot in Mahopac, giving Putnam County legislators, town officials and residents a breather in a mounting controversy.

Judge Andrew O’Rourke signed an order late Tuesday restraining county-hired workers from “all construction, clearing of vegetation, paving and all other activities related to the development of a parking facility” off Route 6 and Mount Hope Road.

The Putnam County Legislature voted 5 to 3 on Aug. 20 to cease the work, but County Executive Robert Bondi vetoed that decision on Friday, saying that if the county withdraws its approval for any part of the project, it could lose all the funding or at the very least the $644,000 spent so far.

Mobile Homes in Mahopac Must Move | The Journal News

Barbara Livingston Nackman bnackman@lohud.com

MAHOPAC – Plans for a two-story retail and office building on Route 6 call for the elimination of a mobile home community that has more than a dozen residents, mostly retirees.

Residents of Knolls Trailer Court, across Route 6 from the Kmart shopping center, value the affordable residences in a convenient location. There are 14 lots on the site’s 3.6 acres off Cooney Road.

“I have no clue where I’d go if I do have to leave here,” said Joe Toleno, 63, a retired carpenter who has lived in the complex for 25 years. Toleno, commander of American Legion Post 1080 in Carmel, said many residents are Legion members and veterans.

This is one of two mobile home communities in Carmel and five in Putnam County. With rents under $700 a month for a trailer lot, the site is one of the lowest-priced living options available.
