The State of America through European eyes : a “Billionaires’ Coup” and U.S. is no longer a “Western” nation

“Partly as a result of the Bush tax cuts of 2001, 2003 and 2005 (shamefully extended by Barack Obama), taxation of the wealthy, in Obama’s words, “is at its lowest level in half a century.” The consequence of such regressive policies is a level of inequality unknown in other developed nations. As the Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz points out, in the past 10 years the income of the top 1% has risen by 18%, while that of blue-collar male workers has fallen by 12%.”

No one bothers to run in small NC town’s election

TAR HEEL, N.C. — The races for mayor and three commission seats are wide open in the small North Carolina town of Tar Heel — because no one bothered to run.

Stampede!

C’mon — what’s not to like?

Hoof it over to Facebook to join the weird news herd.

No one has registered as a candidate for the fall elections in the Bladen County town. The story was first reported by WECT-TV.

The ballots will be printed with blank spaces for voters to write in their choices.

Current Mayor Ricky Martin says he’s not surprised no one wants the jobs. Even in a town of 117, it’s hard work with little compensation. And Martin says state budget cuts mean the next elected officials might have to raise taxes.

Cynthia Shaw, the director of the county’s board of elections, says it’s the first time she has seen an entire town without a candidate.

Pajamas Media » How the Dutch Gaza Flotilla Backfired Politically

Many articles — often with Dutch Internet media taking the lead — exposed alliances between Dutch far leftists and local Islamists who, together with some Christian groups, formed the organization Nederland-Gaza organizing Dutch participation in the second Gaza flotilla. The result has been a serious public debate and an actual increase in pro-Israel activity and support in the country.

As a result of the organizers’ extremism exposed by these reports, all of the Dutch journalists scheduled to sail to Gaza quit, complaining of the flotilla’s “dictatorial atmosphere, paranoia and mutual distrust.”

Editorial: Foul Ball

Editorial: Foul Ball

Thursday, 09 June 2011 00:00

If you were thinking of re-electing state Senator Greg Ball, 40th District, to a second term next fall, think again.

Rumored to be something of a bully behind closed doors, the Republican state senator’s office clearly followed his lead over the past week when it tried to push around a South Salem resident following some questionable practices the office employed in handling her letter that praised the senator for helping her daughter.

The Ledger, and other news organizations, were sent a letter supposedly from Robyn Fields for print that heaped praise on the senator. After it was published, Ms. Fields and her husband, Robert, were understandably appalled to see such personal medical information about their daughter in print. It was then that The Ledger discovered the senator’s office created an e-mail account in Ms. Fields’ name from which to send the letter to newspapers to make it appear legitimate. Making matters worse for Sen. Ball’s office, the Fieldses adamantly and repeatedly denied ever giving permission for the senator to have the letter sent to the press.

Soon after, Sen. Ball and two of his staffers called and apologized to the [...]
