News That Matters – Wednesday, April 27, 2011

nan_portrait1_258x259[1]

In a speech to the Ripon Society, Congresswoman Nan Hayworth said that the British system of national health care will not work here, “because the British are actually willing to sit patiently in line.” Her implication, I assume, means that we should pay whatever it takes to continue giving Americans instant gratification and that seems to be the basis for the Republican party’s take on all things American. Are we really that self-centered and ego-centric as a nation? If so, that explains why people keep wanting to blow us up. [...]

Most states have state flowers or vegetables. Others have breads and fruits. But Utah has a state snack food: Jello. Jello, you see, is about as exciting as Mormons are allowed to be. That wiggling, firm but soft matter made of collagen from ground animal bones (27%), pig skin (44%) and cow hides (28%) and derived with diluted acid, is a lot of fun – if you’re from Utah. [...]

Everyone knows the image of Putnam County is a place where people are white, in a monogamous heterosexual relationship with 1.6 kids running around behind a mortgaged, picket-fenced home in a close-knit safe community. But from the inside we know this not to be the case so someone really should tell our government that the myth of presence is beginning to wear thin. [...]

Roger Ailes Caught Spying on the Reporters at His Small-Town Newspaper

Lindsley agreed to stay on through the end of April for a lengthy transition period, and Roger’s behavior during that transition–including having him followed–suggest that a deep rift had emerged. At some point during the first week of April, Lindsley abruptly cut his transition short and quit outright, as did two of his young reporters, T.J. Haley and Carli-Rae Panny. [...]

News That Matters – Monday, April 18, 2011 – The Passover Edition

DSC01767

Passover begins at sundown this evening and I will not be traveling to Long Island for Seder as I have every year for the past 20+. My mom recently moved to Atlanta liberating me from any mandatory familial relations with that place. I still have family down there but in all these years they’ve never crossed the bridge north, an oft told tale by many who live up here. Folks down on the Island think it’s like Deliverance up here and I have no intention of ever dissuading them. [...]

There is only one reason the United States cannot become, in short order, a nation totally self-sufficient in energy use and production. There is only one reason we cannot clean our air, build new industries and provide a better, brighter future for the next generation to come along. There is only one reason the United States cannot create millions of news jobs and that reason is that you and I no longer control our own government. Big Oil does. And until we take control back from the industrialists we will forever be at their mercy. [...]

News That Matters – Monday, April 11, 2011

harrybrian[1]

Two-Hundred and fifty-five members of Congress chose to ignore overwhelming scientific evidence that our burning of fossil fuels at the rate we’re burning them is over-heating the atmosphere and leading to a climate imbalance that is raising the overall temperature of the planet and all in an effort to increase profits for, well, you guessed it, the profiteers and shareholders of the very companies that are slowly killing us and destroying the planet. [...]

Where’s Nan? III

Last week Congresswoman Nan Hayworth voted along with 254 of her colleagues to pass the “Energy Tax Prevention Act of 2011″ which “amends the Clean Air Act to prohibit the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency from promulgating any regulation concerning, taking action relating to, or taking into consideration the emission of a greenhouse gas to address climate change.” Yes, you read the right: The Congress of the United States voted to screw the planet and did so by an overwhelming margin. If there’s ever been a time for a genuine people’s revolution that time is now. [...]
