News That Matters – Friday, May 20, 2011 – Things To Do Edition

After a little phone call to Burnwell yesterday afternoon they brought the price of their delivered 46.2 gallons of propane down from $8.599 a gallon ($408.10)to $4.999 a gallon ($241.37), saying that was fair. Based on the evidence collected from you, dear readers, to what you are paying with other companies, it is. But there’s still a note to the Attorney General’s office regarding price gouging on Burnwell/Inergey’s part (thanks, Bill), that should set some fires alight. I have to wonder how many customers simply pay the bill… [...]

Everyone has had their panties wadded up over the Marcellus shale for the past couple of years and that’s not even nearby. But as it turns out there’s another layer of shale that is under our very feet, the Utica Shale formation, and that one is next in line for deeper drilling and hydrofracking. I’m willing to bet Putnam County government is already preparing plans to allow that where it underlies Putnam Valley and Philipstown. [...]

Back in the day when we were kids and you had your lunch money stolen you’d run home and tell your mom who would call the other kid’s mom who would say, “My son would never do such a thing!” Then she’d smack the crap out of him, not necessarily for the alleged crime but for dragging her in to it. If the offenders parent had a conscience they’d show up at your front door, kid in tow, to offer an apology. Usually that was the end of it. [...]

After years of protest, hard work, sponsor boycotts and the like, Glenn Beck’s ratings are no longer as high as an elephant’s eye, and the elephant is a little ashamed at the connection. It’s gotten so bad that even Putnam’s own right-wing media demagogue, Roger Ailes, is happy to see the Beckster make a rapid departure from the scene – but with a caveat. [...]

NY State Senator Greg Ball has resigned his seat in order to, as he said, “Put my best efforts towards representing the people of this district in the Congress of the United States.” Addressing a hastily organized press conference just outside the Senate chambers, Mr. Ball said that while his election to the Senate was the defining moment of his life, he felt that he could do a better job for his constituents in Washington and not in Albany and challenged Nan Hayworth on her loyalty to the Republican party and its ideals. [...]

I say, tax the rich which a growing number of GOPers are finally agreeing including State Senator John Bonacic. And I say, stop returning to Wall Street the $13 billion collected each year in stock transfer taxes. And if the rich don’t like it, qu’ils mangent de la brioche or we can eat them. [...]

Lastly this Friday morning, over the past few weeks I have managed to offend Democrats, Republicans, Arabs, Israeli’s, a single Irish woman and others too numerous to list. If I have not offended you I apologize for the oversight so please let me know so I can get you on the list. So much political correctness, so little time! [...]

Alright, it’s not the end of the world. The sun is out, I’m not lost anymore, it’s not too cold, I’m warmly dressed and it’s not all that far back to the car. Even the “splushy” feeling in my socks proved slightly humorous as we trod down the trail another few hundred yards when we reached the Blue-blazed Three Lakes Trail. Now I knew where we were with confidence. All was going to be alright. [...]
