Dan Bern Takes New York

Comparisons to Bob Dylan and even Lenny Bruce flow regularly from reviewers and for good reason; His poetry is as metaphorically deep as the former and as devilishly humorous as the latter. Combine that with his rough-and-tumble strumming guitar style, the mid-western twang in his voice and high-energy, personable stage presence and you end up with a new American voice that stands out on the crowded singer-songwriter scene. [...]

Dan Bern With Common Rotation. A rare New York performance by this mid-western singer-songwriter. Dan has worked with Putnam County’s Jonathan Demme, writing original songs for Demme’s off-Broadway production of “Family Week”, which included a duet with Emmylou Harris. And if you’ve ever seen, “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” you were listening to Dan’s songs. [...]

It was only Dan Birmingham and Tony Hay that had the nerve to vote against the sales tax extension last night at the Putnam County Courthouse. That means there are seven other Legislators who need to be un-elected three of whom are up for election this year; Richie Othmer, Sam Oliverio and Dini LoBue. [...]

The Putnam County legislature is still trying to extend the extra sales tax rate since they’re too afraid to cut spending as if Legislators might actually face opposition in their elections. The Eldridge/Tamagna administration claims that the extra taxes are paid by people from outside Putnam County but I cannot imagine someone from Yorktown driving to Carmel to shop at Hannaford’s. Maybe that’s just me. Keep an eye on Eldridge and Tamagna and your pocket: they’ve got long, itching fingers. Tax And Spend Republicans. Ya gotta love it! [...]

Easter is right around the corner and the family is coming over, as they usually do, and you know as well as I do that your dining room, guest room and living rooms aren’t exactly as nifty as they could be. Not that anyone in the family will mind, they’re family after all, and will not mention the faded walls, cracks and dents and dinks left over from last year. But you know your cousin Sheila will mention it in a facebook post… Contact Taconicarts today for an estimate on getting that cleaned up and shutting Sheila up for good. Just imagine! [...]

The point is that after Bondi complained about Medicaid he also supported the construction of Senior Housing projects such as the Pulte Homes monstrosity in Carmel, knowing that at some point 25% of the seniors living there will one day need to tap into Medicaid causing the budget to rise accordingly. Well, Carmel now has 300 additional proposed senior housing units on the drawing boards compliments of Paul Camarda. [...]

What’s more, with all the foreclosures that have taken place during the past two years and with banks seeking to cut their loses by putting some of these places up for rent, the market is in a glut and yet landlords will not come down from what they’re asking or make accommodations to get someone in there and the income flowing in again. [...]

News That Matters – Friday, December 17, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

To seek an example of power and influence we got to thinking; who might benefit from a particular candidate getting elected and decided to take a look at campaign contributions to Vincent Leibell to see how many donors either already had contracts with the county, were thanking the former Senator for his assistance in the past or who hoped to get contracts with the county should he become County Executive. [...]

News That Matters – Friday, December 10, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

In the early morning of December 21st, at 1:33AM, in fact, North America begins it’s descent into darkness as the light of the moon is blocked by the earth’s shadow in what will be a rare total eclipse of the moon, at least for our region. Totality, that point where the moon is completely blocked will be at 3:17AM. [...]
