I read your account of the Katz/Hayworth meeting in the Putnam County Times, which was held at the Patterson Town Hall on March 19, 2011.
According to the article Jeff Green of Kent stated “that there is a correlation between increasing jobs and increasing the taxes on wealthy people and corporations.” Assemblywoman Nan Hayworth responded by stating the Italian Economist Alberto Alesino conducted a study of “20 Nations that were in fiscal crisis [such] as we are facing.” Hayworth further stated that Alesina’s study concluded that “countries that cut taxes and cut government spending did well.”
First, Alesina has conducted numerous studies and the only study I could find that closely approximates that dates of the fiscal crisis was published in 2009 and the data used for the period ended in 2007, well before the 2008 collapse.
In addition, Congresswoman Hayworth, at least according to the article, did not identify which 20 countries Alesina studied. However, a review of Alesina’s study demonstrates that the countries studied were members of the OECD. A review of the statistics of the OECD countries, while not exactly contradicting her claim, does not support her contention that lower taxes leads to higher growth. The [...]

As if it wasn’t bad enough being a Baby Boomer in this most screwed up county, try being a very senior citizen approaching the 90 year mark. For the past few years my mom who is now 87 has been housebound and virtually bedridden . She does not want to go to a nursing home and she wants to stay in her very modest home in Lake Peekskill.
When she was 75, mom got Lyme’s disease and she went from being an active, vibrant, incredibly strong woman who had more energy than most women half her age, to an invalid. She has Medicare and Blue Cross/ Blue Shield which it turns out does not pay much for the care she now needs.
Here in Put Valley we have a state of the art senior center that is actually a county, not a town facility. The staff there is mostly PV residents who had cushy jobs with the town and who managed to get transferred to another cushy job at the SC. In our town it’s very hard to get on of these government jobs unless you’re related by blood or marriage to one of the 5 Families, but that’s [...]

There’s generally only one outcome of sleeping at the wheel. Harm.
Unless enough residents of Putnam Valley wake up in time, Putnam Valley will be steered into the path of oncoming developers, encouraged by the Incentive Zoning legislation on which our Town Board will be voting –as soon as next Wednesday..
In short, the legislation is an invitation from the Town Board to developers which goes like this:
Dear Developer, Give us something WE like and you can do whatever YOU like in our town. For example, give us a town park named after a developer-friendly town official and we’ll let you build on our steep slopes, ridgelines, wetlands. We’ll even let you build houses in commercially zoned areas, and commercial buildings in residential areas. Whatever. Oh, and we’ll also overlook lots of other zoning regulations. Density? That’s up to you. We’d really love to have that park. Who’s going to pay for the increase in school tax? In required new roads, sewerage, fire and safety? Don’t worry. Taxpayers love parks (except for the Malcontents and Obstructionists). And, by the way, you don’t have to give really good land for the park. You can pick any piece [...]
While Walmart was busy chipping away at employees’ perks, the swingin’ Swedes at Ikea were busy handing out early Christmas presents to staffers in the form of free bikes.
A company rep says the bikes, which were custom made for the home goods chain, were given out to the company’s 12,400 U.S. employees as a way of saying thanks for “great results and great team work… It has been a good year for Ikea US (and Ikea Global as well).”
