News That Matters – Monday, June 7, 2010

In case you were interested, the county’s portion of the utility bills at Tilly Foster is somewhere around $37,000 and the property tax bill we have to pick up is around $20,000. We also don’t know what the management costs are at the farm (Harold Gary does, maybe,) since as the property owner we’re responsible, as any landlord would be, for repairs on the buildings and management of the grounds. [...]

News That Matters – Friday, May 28, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

If anyone reading in The City has an available apartment, spare bedroom or a comfy couch for me to sleep on from Thursday night (late) June 3rd through Saturday night June 5th, please let me know. Downtown is preferable but almost anywhere within the city Subway system will work just fine. [...]

News That Matters – May 14, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Taxing one demographic to pay for services for another is not good governance, but a budgetary shell game played by politicians who tax those most likely to remain silent. But the people being hurt most are those who are doing nothing more than trying to keep a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs, their children clothed and their families secure. If this is what you expect from your county government, this is what you got. [...]

News That Matters – May 7, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Weather for this weekend is a mixed bag. Nice today, a little rain possible for tomorrow morning and Sunday will be cool, cloudy and windy. But hey, that’s spring! So, what to do? Get on the outside of things anyway. Take a hike. Work in the garden. Read the Sunday NY Times in a sheltered spot and don’t come in until you’re done. In any other words: stay away from anything with a cathode ray tube. Everyone knows that watching television on weekends is the leading cause of brain tumors, blindness, halitosis and hemorrhoids. [...]

News That Matters – May 3, 2010

A note to Mayor Bloomberg: Early yesterday morning you said, “Terrorists who want to take our freedoms away from us focus on the symbol of those freedoms, and that’s New York City.” Mr. Mayor, the only terrorists who can take away our freedoms are ourselves. Osama bin Laden didn’t shred the US Constitution or write the USA PATRIOT Act, we did that all on our own. In the future, please cut the hyperbole and stay focused. Thanks. [...]

News That Matters – April 30, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

My question about these things is always the same: why not put the effort into cleaning up the stormwater and septic problems that are causing all this vegetation to grow and solve the problem once and for all? Perhaps in the future, before DEC allows application of herbicides, they require that it be part of a larger program that will lead to that application being the final step in an overall process? Otherwise, we find ourselves repeating the same steps over and again and never really solving the problem at the base. [...]

News That Matters – April 16, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Today brings you our weekly “Things To Do Edition” which is chock full of interesting events you’ll not likely see posted or advertised elsewhere. Why not pass your copy along to your friends in the area and help News That Matters grow? And as always, your help and support – or your physical action- is essential to not only keeping News That Matters going and growing but to make the change you’re seeking here in Putnam County and the Hudson Valley. There’s a lot of good going on but we can make it better. [...]

News That Matters – April 9, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Okay, it’s more than a week since I’ve switched over to the GOP and I feel great! And to celebrate this weekend I’m gonna get me a martini, a gun, put on a Pat Boone album and don my best polyester Leisure suit. [...]

SE Planning Board Recap 3/22/10

SE Planning Board Recap 3/22/10

Posted by: “Lynne Eckardt” lynne.eckardt@gmail.com

Hi All,

Even though I still attend almost every Planning Board meeting I haven’t

tackled a recap for quite a while but this one is really too good or bad

(depending on your bent) to pass up.

Chairman LaPerch was in fine form having the patience of a toddler at

a Toys-R-Us clearance. And long time Planning Board member, Dan

Armstrong, had the unmitigated gall to claim he had no idea what the term

‘spot zoning’ means. Really, Dan? Really?

Of course while much has changed since the days of Chairman George Rohrman

much has remained the same. In general the Board has still never met a new

warehouse or old auto/tractor dealer/service center- (oops, make that

‘General Business’) it didn’t like. In fact the complex contortions made to

accommodate Brewster Honda make Houdini look like a piker. More on that

later.

On item 1 (‘Palumbo Sand and Gravel’) Peder Scott appeared to have won his

engineering degree in a raffle and Chairman LaPerch gave him an appropriate

and much needed dressing down. Baroody (scaled back to one lot) is finally
