News That Matters – May 3, 2010

A note to Mayor Bloomberg: Early yesterday morning you said, “Terrorists who want to take our freedoms away from us focus on the symbol of those freedoms, and that’s New York City.” Mr. Mayor, the only terrorists who can take away our freedoms are ourselves. Osama bin Laden didn’t shred the US Constitution or write the USA PATRIOT Act, we did that all on our own. In the future, please cut the hyperbole and stay focused. Thanks. [...]

My question about these things is always the same: why not put the effort into cleaning up the stormwater and septic problems that are causing all this vegetation to grow and solve the problem once and for all? Perhaps in the future, before DEC allows application of herbicides, they require that it be part of a larger program that will lead to that application being the final step in an overall process? Otherwise, we find ourselves repeating the same steps over and again and never really solving the problem at the base. [...]

News That Matters – April 28, 2010

I thought the numbers posted here were a little off the mark and so I did my homework. In 2006, the Ballster pulled 55% of the vote, not 71% as the PSD poster claims. And for the 2008 race against John Degnan he scored 61% of the vote not 75% as was quoted. I would have left a comment on the blog correcting the poster but, as you could guess, the comments section was closed and there’s no contact information available. Now, isn’t that just like him and his peeps? [...]

News That Matters – April 14, 2010

Action Update: For those who would like to see a little justice in our fair county there is still time to help us get the charges leveled against Carmel resident Lori Kemp dropped and our letter writing campaign to District Attorney Adam Levy is in full swing. If you have not yet written (why is that?) there’s some good information and a sample letter here in a post called, “How You Can Help Lori Kemp” which has had more than 100 visits in the past few days! [...]

Okay, it’s more than a week since I’ve switched over to the GOP and I feel great! And to celebrate this weekend I’m gonna get me a martini, a gun, put on a Pat Boone album and don my best polyester Leisure suit. [...]

Wind power grid could meet all electricity needs – Green House – USATODAY.com

Offshore wind turbines, if spread out and connected to a power grid, could potentially produce enough electricity to meet global needs, says a new study.

A grid that connects turbines could eliminate the unsteadiness that is currently wind power’s biggest drawback,  according to the study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences.

“Making wind-generated electricity more steady will enable wind power to become a much larger fraction of our electric sources,” said lead author Willett Kempton, director of the University Of Delaware’s Center for Carbon-free Power Integration.

And so yesterday I changed my political registration from the Green Party to the Republican Party. So there! But today I feel a tad awkward. Being both gay and Jewish I’m not sure which half of myself I’m supposed to hate or repress. Jeez. Being under the “Big Tent” is like rowing in one direction while seeking another. [...]

Port Authority plans sustainable growth near Stewart Airport

NEW WINDSOR – The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, operator of Stewart Airport, is planning for sustainable energy projects in the vicinity of the airport.

Port Authority Director of the Office of Environmental and Energy Programs Christopher Zeppie said they have contracted with the New York Power Authority to identify projects in the area.

“These projects could be wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, those kinds of projects from which green energy can be made and we would purchase the renewable energy attributes from them,” he said.

In turn, the Port Authority would sell the power to the grid.

The Death of Coal?

BY FC Expert Blogger Terry TamminenWed Mar 17, 2010

This blog is written by a member of our expert blogging community and expresses that expert’s views alone.

In 2009, nearly 15,000 megawatts of proposed coal fired power plants were canceled. To put that in perspective, that would represent about a third of all electricity generating capacity of a state the size of California. This is not a consequence of a slow economy alone – – eight years ago, 36,000 megawatts of new coal plants were on the drawing boards and a mere 13% of those were actually built. If coal is dying as a source of US power generation, what’s the cause and what will replace it as we power up the reviving American economy?

First, let me count the ways that coal has finally been unmasked as not so “cheap” power: – Toxic coal ash waste, like the piles that destroyed rivers and thousands of acres of farmlands in the Tennessee Valley at a cost of $1.5 billion for cleanup. – USEPA finalizing rules that will prevent mountain top mines from dumping their waste products into someone [...]

News That Matters – February 22, 2010

We pause here to wish a speedy recovery to a Kent neighbor from Farmer’s Mills Road who surprised two burglars in his home last week and and was found badly beaten and semi-conscious several hours later by coworkers wondering why he’d not come back from lunch. He’s currently in hospital but late reports say that the police have been able to interview him. Let’s hope the guys get caught soon. [...]
