News That Matters – Friday, August 20, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

I applaud Congressman Tom Perriello, Mayor Bloomberg and President Obama and all the others who have taken a moment to think before they spoke and take a dim view of Congressman John Hall and all those others who have spoken before they thought and I take an especially dark view of those who spread lies and misinformation as cover to their bigotry and hatred. [...]

News That Matters – Friday, August 13, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

My little cousin is now single after an 8 year relationship. Did she call to tell me? No. But I learned about it on Facebook. You’d be surprised at just how much of my family’s life is played out on those pages. For example, my sister “likes” Rush Limbaugh. [...]

News That Matters – Friday, July 2, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Good Friday Morning,

It’s been one hell of a week over here at the Asylum and to celebrate its end we’re having an informal gathering this evening at about 7:30PM and you are all welcome and encouraged to drop in.

Bring a snack and something to drink.

We’ll have the fire-pit a blaze to ward off the evening chill and to welcome high summer and the start of the Independence Day weekend.

Bring your kids if you like (we’ll keep the debauchery to a low level as we always do,) and your friendly dogs, too. And a tent or sleeping bag if you’re drinking anything other than sugary soft drinks.

The weather promises to be clear and cool, perfect for a night under the stars – and the skies out here in western Kent can be truly stunning…

Directions, for those who need them, are here. RSVP’s are not necessary.

Kudos:

Thanks to MS and WA and DB for their support. To the Town of Kent Highway Department for maintaining my overly-traveled rural road as best they can. To Greg Ball for keeping us all entertained. To the PC Legislature for deciding not  to give corporate welfare [...]

News That Matters – Friday, June 25, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

It was yet another “quite a week” for politics in Putnam County ending with a proposed resolution from the County legislature burying the Corporate Welfare gig they were planning for Paul Camarda and Patterson Crossing. (See, County Legislature Kills Corporate Welfare Try. Again.) 1st District Legislator Vinnie Tamagna took the brunt of it but then he was the point man and refused to let it die, finally using county letterhead to beg a plea as an insert in the Putnam County News and Reporter. [...]

News That Matters – Friday, June 18, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

A woman in Kapurthala, Punjab decided to take matters into her own hands when she suspected her husband was having an illicit affair. Suffice to say that she mixed an intoxicant with some liquor which she fed to her husband. You don’t want to know the rest but she’s been charged with attempted murder and he’s in hospital a few inches shorter. [...]

Gabrielle Foxs’ one-act plays at the Gene Frankel Theatre on Bond Street in NYC. The plays are being performed as part of the Planet Connections Theatre Festivity which consists of a series of 50 plays whose proceeds will be directed toward various charities. [...]

News That Matters – Friday, May 28, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

If anyone reading in The City has an available apartment, spare bedroom or a comfy couch for me to sleep on from Thursday night (late) June 3rd through Saturday night June 5th, please let me know. Downtown is preferable but almost anywhere within the city Subway system will work just fine. [...]

News That Matters – Friday, May 21, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Greg Ball made the news again this week as a week without the Ballster in the news is NOT like waking up in the middle of a root canal. This time he’s claiming that the nominating conventions for his state senate race were “illegal”. What galls the Ball is that he didn’t win. In fact, he lost by a long shot. He does plan a primary race against Mary Beth Murphy assuming he can muster enough support to get on the ballot. So look for a cast of characters from out-of-town going door-to-door seeking your signatures for his petitions. Do we smell the final end of his political career? [...]

News That Matters – May 14, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Taxing one demographic to pay for services for another is not good governance, but a budgetary shell game played by politicians who tax those most likely to remain silent. But the people being hurt most are those who are doing nothing more than trying to keep a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs, their children clothed and their families secure. If this is what you expect from your county government, this is what you got. [...]

News That Matters – April 23, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

I hope everyone had a nice Earth Day. I spent mine trying to figure out how I’m going to pay the County for the simple right to work. Can you believe that? You’ve read it here before (see this link) but it’s worth repeating: In order for blue collar workers to work in Putnam County we have to pay (yes, you read that right, PAY) the county $250 every two year for the privilege and for that we get nothing in return. Those dollars go to the Consumer Affairs Division where, after expenses, our $250′s raked in more than $170,000 in profit for the county above and beyond the cost of running the Consumer Affairs Division. [...]
