Remember back in the day when Republicans in Congress and ‘baggers across the nation were decrying Obama’s bailout of the auto industry? Yeah. Well, they’re pretty silent these days. Why? It seems that not only have they paid back the money – with interest – but the Big Three are now out of bankruptcy and just yesterday Chrysler announced they will keep a plant open which was slated for closure in 2012 and the industry has added 55,000 jobs overall. [...]
The problem in the end may be that those who like the skies dark at night may viewed as “those intellectuals” or, “those people hate children!” as we hear the sports mafias intone until we’re ready to puke. But to vilify someone for wanting the skies dark, which may be the reason they moved here in the first place, is unfair and unjust. That the skies have been dark this long should speak to all of us. To make a change such as this is a decision that should not be based on brawn but on brains. And mark my words: it’s not about the children. [...]
Good Tuesday Morning,
Last Friday I wrote:
I know, I know… there’s a great deal of excitement surrounding the inauguration of Barack Obama come next Tuesday and I’ve listed events in four of Putnam’s six towns. (Missing are Southeast and Philisptown which apparently don’t have happy Democrats).
Putnam Democratic Party chair Lynn Eckardt wrote to say that there are happy Democrats in Southeast and Philipstown. I’ll take her word for it.
The Inauguration kicked off Sunday with a concert at the Lincoln Memorial attended by tens of thousands of people. Here’s a short video of the Hudson Valley’s own Pete Seeger singing Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” along with Tao Rodriguez and Bruce Springsteen.
Here’s a schedule of today’s events in Washington DC: (Source AP)
Gates to the Inaugural Ceremony open at 8 a.m. The inaugural festivities are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol. They will include:
_ Musical selections of The United States Marine Band, followed by the San Francisco Boys Chorus and the San Francisco Girls Chorus. _ Sen. Dianne Feinstein provides call to order and welcoming remarks. _ Invocation by the Rev. Rick [...]
Space Weather News for Dec. 12, 2008 http://spaceweather.com WEEKEND METEORS: Earth is entering a stream of debris from extinct comet 3200 Phaethon, and this is causing the annual Geminid meteor shower. The shower is expected to peak on Dec. 13th and 14th. Normally, as many as 100 meteors per hour shoot out of the constellation Gemini, but this year a bright Moon will interfere with the display, reducing hourly counts to only 20 or so. That’s could still be a nice show. For best results, watch the sky from 10 pm local time on Saturday night (Dec 13th) until dawn on Sunday morning (Dec. 14th). BIGGEST FULL MOON OF THE YEAR: The Moon that’s causing trouble for the Geminid display happens to be biggest full Moon of 2008, as much as 14% wider and 30% brighter than lesser Moons we’ve seen earlier this year. An astronomer would say this is a “perigee Moon” because it occurs at perigee, the side of the Moon’s elliptical orbit closest to Earth. Go outside tonight and take a look. The meteor rate may be low, but the lunar beauty index is off the charts. Check http://spaceweather.com for updates [...]
