My question about these things is always the same: why not put the effort into cleaning up the stormwater and septic problems that are causing all this vegetation to grow and solve the problem once and for all? Perhaps in the future, before DEC allows application of herbicides, they require that it be part of a larger program that will lead to that application being the final step in an overall process? Otherwise, we find ourselves repeating the same steps over and again and never really solving the problem at the base. [...]
Action Update: For those who would like to see a little justice in our fair county there is still time to help us get the charges leveled against Carmel resident Lori Kemp dropped and our letter writing campaign to District Attorney Adam Levy is in full swing. If you have not yet written (why is that?) there’s some good information and a sample letter here in a post called, “How You Can Help Lori Kemp” which has had more than 100 visits in the past few days! [...]
Mark Anderson made several suggestions, including consolidating school districts, and taking zoning and planning power away from towns and villages and putting it in the hands of the county. KC Anderson. suggested that public transportation be expanded and improved, and Mark Anderson suggested that county services be clustered around what little public transport we had. [...]
SE Planning Board Recap 3/22/10

Hi All,
Even though I still attend almost every Planning Board meeting I haven’t
tackled a recap for quite a while but this one is really too good or bad
(depending on your bent) to pass up.
Chairman LaPerch was in fine form having the patience of a toddler at
a Toys-R-Us clearance. And long time Planning Board member, Dan
Armstrong, had the unmitigated gall to claim he had no idea what the term
‘spot zoning’ means. Really, Dan? Really?
Of course while much has changed since the days of Chairman George Rohrman
much has remained the same. In general the Board has still never met a new
warehouse or old auto/tractor dealer/service center- (oops, make that
‘General Business’) it didn’t like. In fact the complex contortions made to
accommodate Brewster Honda make Houdini look like a piker. More on that
later.
On item 1 (‘Palumbo Sand and Gravel’) Peder Scott appeared to have won his
engineering degree in a raffle and Chairman LaPerch gave him an appropriate
and much needed dressing down. Baroody (scaled back to one lot) is finally

Senator Vincent Leibell has introduced the “Support For Marriage Act” [S.6969] which will, in most cases, outlaw divorce in New York State and prohibit the state from recognizing marriages performed in other states. Senator Leibell said, “In our desire to protect the sanctity of marriage we’ve taken two important steps. One, we have successfully prohibited gay men and women from gaining legal equality and second, if you have taken the oath, ’till death do us part’ then we want to make sure you keep it.” The bill would allow divorce only under very specific circumstances. Victims of domestic abuse, if confirmed by hospital and police records, would be able to file for divorce only if the victim can prove the abuse is life threatening and the relationship has not produced any children. Good Friday Morning,
The weather report was something along the lines of gusty windy, driving rains, falling trees and power lines. Instead, it has gently snowed and snowed enough that I was throwing snowballs last night. It’s still snowing outside this morning.
The Town Board in Kent, in its tentative budget, proposes to give itself a raise. Putnam Valley, so I hear, is intending to do the same thing. Raises for elected officials when foreclosures are higher than ever, unemployment is reaching 10% and everyone else is cutting back?
Looking for a hike this weekend? Take a walk around the Wiccopee Reservoir on Wiccopee Road in Putnam Valley (about a mile west of the Taconic State Parkway. The Wiccopee Reservoir holds water for the City of Peekskill, releasing it into the Hollow Brook as it flows on its way to that city on the Hudson. This 500 acre property, backed by the scouting reservation and Fahnestock State Park, offers an easy 3 mile loop hike (on a serviceable road) around the lower reservoir and a walk along a beautiful portion of the upper. It takes you across the top of one, and then along the base of the other [...]
In case you’re paying attention to the campaigns, the Concerned Citizens of Carmel/Mahopac are hosting a forum tomorrow night (Tuesday) at the Mahopac library starting at 7PM. If you go be sure to ask any sitting rep to explain how they allowed Lori Kemp’s life to be screwed over and what protections they have in place to ensure that your home isn’t blasted off its foundations. [...]

Good Friday Morning,
It was 34.3° here this morning and I could hear the jade plant and the orchids shivering outside. There is a call for rain later this afternoon and evening. Tomorrow is supposed to be windy and rainy for most of the day but you should still get outside. Along with the events listed below (and the many that I don’t even know about), if the weather does keep you in I still want you to get outside! To help with that, PBS has made their new series by Ken Burns on our National Parks available for free viewing at their website here. Use a fast ‘net connect.

Downtown to get upscale China shop Marcela Rojas mrojas@lohud.com
BREWSTER – Bob Dumont has no doubt that high-end crystal, china and flatware has a place on Main Street.
The owner of the Bowl Company said he firmly believes in the motto, “If you build it, they will come,” because he saw how well-heeled women from Westchester County would make their way through an alleyway to purchase the Wedgwood and Waterford items he sold from his warehouse.
In the past four years, Dumont operated his Internet shipping business – and periodic warehouse sales – at 86 Main St., a site with no street access behind a deli.
But in February, Dumont moved to 162 Main St. so he could expand his operations and offer a retail component. The Bowl Company store will open its doors tomorrow.

Winter is coming on believe it or not and now is the time to begin weatherizing your home against the cold and to protect your pocketbook from what should be pretty expensive heating costs. Over the next few weeks I’ll be including some common-sense tips on what you should be doing now to get your place in shape. But one important and often over looked project is to refinish the outside of your home. Believe it or not, a good house painter will take the time to secure the outside of your home, re-caulk windows and doors and tighten up the external structure. If you’re living in an older home an investment in a good exterior paint job could save you money this winter. [...]
