Peekskill Hollow is a large crack in the earth running generally southwest to northeast and connects Kent Cliffs with the heart of Putnam Valley at Oscawana Corners passing through communities of Tompkins Corners, Adams Corners and others along the way. And though this “cow path” has seen suburbanization over the years the history of our place is still widely evident in the old homes, farmsteads and barns that line the way. [...]
Okay, it’s more than a week since I’ve switched over to the GOP and I feel great! And to celebrate this weekend I’m gonna get me a martini, a gun, put on a Pat Boone album and don my best polyester Leisure suit. [...]
“The good news is we have some things we can do here strengthening our tourism industry. Walkway Over the Hudson is a huge success; we’re working on Bannerman Castle, we’re working on the Fishkill Depot, and then there are high tech businesses that want to come here in a variety of different types. So, we have a real future here.” – Senator Chuck Schumer
Good Wednesday Morning,
The National Weather Service has issued a fire watch from this morning through this evening. Today’s warm temperatures, low humidity and breezy conditions could cause even the smallest of fires to spread rapidly so caution is advised.
According to results from the current poll at PlanPutnam.org, a full 33% of you are not going to be keeping a garden this year. You know, there is only one excuse for not doing so: death. Yes, if you have died you are excused from keeping a garden so get out there and get to it!
By the by, if you are one of the 33% who were dead when you answered the poll (or plan to die over the next few weeks) I’d be interested to know what [...]
And so yesterday I changed my political registration from the Green Party to the Republican Party. So there! But today I feel a tad awkward. Being both gay and Jewish I’m not sure which half of myself I’m supposed to hate or repress. Jeez. Being under the “Big Tent” is like rowing in one direction while seeking another. [...]
Yeah, I’ve been away for a lot of reasons that only a few of you have asked about until a wonderful event, an 80th birthday party for longtime Kent resident Kathy Freston last Wednesday evening, when a number of people got on my case – and in my face – about not publishing News That Matters. And then over this past weekend I received a number of emails asking what’s happened. If you’ve written or called you know. If you haven’t, then you haven’t missed the column. [...]

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) announces the start of the Open Application Period for the Landowner Incentive Program: Management and Protection of Bog Turtle Habitat.
Private landowners and not-for-profit groups working on private land will be able to apply for funding for the protection of at-risk species and their habitats, specifically bog turtles and their habitat. Eligibility is limited to privately-owned land within portions of following counties: Columbia, Greene, Ulster, Dutchess, Putnam, Sullivan and Orange.
A total of approximately $150,000 will be made available for projects. The cost effectiveness of a project will have a direct impact on an application’s score. All grants require a minimum of 25% in matching funds from non-federal and non-state funding sources.
The deadline for pre-application submission is June 1, 2010.

Rental unit occupancy rates are down as are rents as fewer are able to afford the high cost of local residency. Brewster has so many apartments for rent they don’t know what to do and the homeless population is rising across the nation as people are forced out of their homes and apartments for their inability to cover their monthly payments. The national suicide rate has also steadily increased as people find themselves buried under a growing mountain of debt – not from credit cards mind you, but from the day-to-day bills that can no longer being met and who see no light at the end of the tunnel. Conservation easement acquired for Red Hook farm
RED HOOK – Environmental organization Scenic Hudson has protected the largest agricultural property in its history of farmland preservation, acquiring a conservation easement that extinguishes development rights to the 378-acre McKeon Farm in the Town of Red Hook.
The transaction guarantees the land will continue contributing to Red Hook’s economy while preserving the town’s rural, agricultural character.
Scenic Hudson Land Conservation Director Seth McKee said the land easement program is a win-win.
“It’s a completely voluntary agreement where landowners commit their lands in perpetuity, which transcends whatever changes in local zoning,” he said. “It is a bulwark against suburban sprawl pressures, which while they have abated somewhat, the long-term development potential of northern Dutchess county is very high, so it prevents the undermining of one of the mainstays of our rural economy in the Hudson Valley, which is agriculture.”
The McKeon Farm includes picturesque pastures and hay fields, which support grass-fed beef cattle, a horse boarding and training operation, goats, chickens and an orchard. More than half of the land’s soils are designated USDA Prime Farmland or of Statewide Significance. By clearing considerable overgrowth, owners Robert and Elisabeth McKeon have restored many [...]
2010 is going to be an interesting year for politics in Putnam County. The sides are lining up for a couple of Legislative seats and the race for the County Executive’s seat. On the legislative side the Republican machine is gunning to shoot down one of its own, Tony Fusco, trying to remove the one guy who does what a decent legislator should be doing: asking questions and demanding answers. In another race, Maryellen O’Dell, who has been a supporter of sales tax increases and other “fees” to keep the county afloat, may also be facing a primary challenge and we’ll know for certain in a month or two.
