Rep. Nan Hayworth just can’t help putting her foot in her mouth when it comes to talking about the Indian Point nuclear reactors.

In the video, Hayworth says, “it would be very difficult to evacuate a substantial number of people from this area,” and then she acknowledges that we live in one of the more seismically active parts of the US. And then she acknowledges that a 7.0 earthquake is something we can expected “in this part of the world.”

What Hayworth doesn’t tell the audience in Deer Park is that a 7.0 quake could likely create a substantial radioactive release that would, in turn, trigger a mandatory evacuation order for the 22 million people that within 50 miles of Indian Point. But what’s a little chaos among the little people.

Hayworth has been a staunch supporter of keeping Indian Point open since she was elected to Congress last year.

Democratic legislators in both the State Assembly and Senate are calling for single-payer health care in New York by introducing universal healthcare legislation.

Should this landmark health-care bill succeed, public health care coverage would replace for-profit insurance-based health coverage and health-care premiums, deductibles, and co-pays would be entirely eliminated. Financing of the system would be provided by a graduated income tax. Private-sector health-care services would not change; medical professionals would be paid by the state much in the same way as they're paid by health-insurance companies.

Assemblyman Richard Gottfried (AD-75), chair of the Health Committee and Senator Thomas Duane (SD-29) are the initial sponsors of the legislation, which is co-sponsored by 62 other legislators in both chambers. There is no Republican sponsor in the GOP controlled Senate, however, which makes it more unlikely that the bill would see passage in the upper chamber.
