News That Matters is now the 24,742th most popular political blog on the planet! At the beginning of the year we were at 25,125th place, and increase of 919 places in 4 months. Keep up the good work and keep spreading the good news! In fact, our weekly Things To Do Edition (like the one you’re reading now) is a perfect forward to your friends. Send this copy along to someone you know who does not read. Then they can subscribe on their own with the link to the right. [...]
I’ll bet the “Democrats For Leibell” are a little red-faced this morning and if Greg Ball and Anthony Scannapieco are gloating right now, well, they kinda deserve it. What I want to know is if the Senator knew about this during the campaign. If so, there’s a real problem on top of everything else. [...]
While we’re talking about the Ballster, I had to remove a comment from the News That Matters website from one of his supporters named, “Kaplowitzgal” who, it was obvious, was not a gal nor a supporter of Mr. Kaplowitz. If this is the way Mr Ball is running his campaign, by storming his opponents press conferences and spamming websites, imagine what it will be like if he should actually win this election? What kind of sick, demented fans has this guy got? [...]
7PM – The Truth about the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity. Renowned climatologist Dr. James Hansen will be presenting his new book, Storms of My Grandchildren: The Truth about the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity. Coined the father of climate science, Hansen is the director of NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies. More than 30 years ago he created one of the first climate models, Model Zero, which he used to accurately predict warming scenarios in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. His Congressional testimonies propelled the issue of global climate change into the public and policy discourse. Learn more at www.caryinstitute.org. Events are free and open to the public. Location: Cary Institute’s auditorium, located at 2801 Sharon Turnpike (Rte. 44) in Millbrook, New York [...]
Wonder Lake State Park, which straddles the Kent/Patterson town line is a lot unlike the proposed Patterson Crossing development which also strides that line. The New York/New Jersey Trail Conference has been hard at work creating and formalizing a trail network within the park and the results are becoming obvious. [...]
Good Friday Morning,
The Town of Kent goes back to court this coming Monday morning after Judge O’Rourke decided last week to hold the town liable for Swine flu, bad breath and Celine Dion.
As many of you know I’ve engaged in a political quest of late and so far my impressions are this: It’s a silly, anti-democratic system designed to humiliate, intimidate and befuddle the voters so that a select few can get a boner over power and control of your lives.
If they were actually interested in good governance it would be one thing. If they were involved in graft and corruption it would be fine, too, as at least it would have a point. (Not a good point, but a point nonetheless.) Yet we allow these folk to control and sway our opinions because they’re practiced at the skill of political demagoguery. They don’t work for candidates as much as they work against them and they do so with remarkable success. You all know who these folk are in your town, every town has them, and I’ll bet you can even name them.
My advice? Well, shooting them would be illegal but it would free [...]
Good Friday Morning,
We had our first day of summer weather yesterday and though it’s more like we’re living in the Adirondacks than the Hudson Valley, all I can say is that I hope summer last a little longer than usual to make up for the late start.
The NY State Senate failed to take any action on property tax relief this year even though there were dozens of bills in front of them that might have offered *something*. Among them was an Omnibus bill, a collection of other bills that would have included circuit breaker legislation (similar to what Sandy Galef proposed). Even though those bills were only hesitant, politically easy baby-steps to an actual solution, the shifting of education funding from property taxes to a progressive, graduated income tax, would have been nice. The average NY property owner would have seen an actual, real, reduction in their overall property tax bills.
Regular readers will be familiar with my constant calls of support of Kevin Cahill’s “Equality in Education Act” and wonder why the solution is not ‘on the table’ in Albany. It’s easy: Sheldon Silver. Oh, and the super-rich who would actually have to start paying a [...]
Good Friday Morning,
Rumor has it that today is going to be our first real summer day and I can’t wait. Once the skies clear in a couple of hours, the temps should top out at about 75º with low humidity. Tomorrow, not as nice and Sunday cool and cloudy. So take the day off or quit early and enjoy the weather.
I attended a star-studded event last evening in Beacon honoring Fishkill’s Historical Focus and long-tine activist Connie Hogarth. Many Putnam County residents were in attendance and it was nice to meet them in this setting. Historical Focus has been leading the fight to preserve what’s not been paved over of the Fishkill Army Depot, the largest such facility used by revolutionaries fighting the British from 1776 to 1783. Most of that land is now covered by a failed shopping mall and as far back as the 1970′s historical groups have been trying to save it but profits and development have trumped history. Even to this day, with the recent discovery of 100 colonial graves on the property, the Town of Fishkill is forging ahead with development plans that would pave over the remainder of that land. Connie [...]
Good Friday Morning,
A little frost on the pumpkin this morning, eh?
Putnam County is finally going to get a hotel but before you invite your uncle Ned up from Tuscaloosa just keep in mind that the hotel is in Putnam but only by about an inch or two. Slated for the old Kelties Bum Steer property on Route 6, the $3 million project – complete with tax breaks – is about to begin.
Tilly Foster Farm opens for the season tomorrow (Saturday) with a host of activities.
A woman in Scarsdale had had enough of her 10 and 12 year old fighting and bickering and did what every parent has threatened to do: “If the two of you don’t stop now I’m putting you both out of the car!” They didn’t, so she did. Her 12 year old ran after the car and caught up with it while the younger child was left standing on the street until a passerby notified police. Now, half of you will be sympathetic with the mother, half with the children. But whichever side of the coin you fall on, make sure your kids read the article about this before your next [...]
As expected, last evening the County Legislature voted 6-3 to approve the lease agreement for Tilly Foster Farm. The meeting ran way late, too late for me to make my class at Arts on the Lake so I must publicly apologize to my instructor, the remarkable Lora Lee Ecobelli, and my class partner for not being there. The three Legislators who were brave enough to vote in favor of fiscal oversight and responsibility were Tony Fusco, Sam Oliverio and my personal hero, Dan Birmingham. You owe them a debt of gratitude. [...]
