News That Matters – Friday, November 12, 2010

We hear that Mr. Camarda had approached the Governor for redress of his poverty and got him to agree to release around $1.5 million in transportation funds in a state that is technically bankrupt but seems to have money to dole out to the wealthiest among us while we, well, we struggle without such largess. But the funds need a municipal sponsor and guess which town is up to the task? Stay tuned. If the Putnam Press drops the ball on this you can be sure it will bounce back in our direction. [...]

Back in September some Carmel youth had an altercation: one threw eggs at another and the eggee smashed the guy’s car with a baseball bat in retaliation. In my world that would have been the likely end of it. But the instigator went crying to the police and now this poor kid is facing felony charges. Here we have yet another example of society stepping into a battle between two people that will ultimately cost us all a great deal of money and destroy the life of an otherwise innocent kid. In our rush for the unobtainable, a perfect society, we never look forward to the results. [...]

The quick poll we’re running on reducing municipal budgets is going well. More than 45 votes have been tallied so far but I’m not going to tell you the results just yet. Instead I’ll ask that if you have not yet participated to do so – and to ask your friends to do so as well. Tell them to click here or here. We’ll discuss the results in Monday’s column. [...]

If you’re looking for a relatively easy 3-hour hike in the Highlands this weekend, Round Hill is the place for you. The trail starts on Route 9 just north of Route 301 (map) and follows an old country road for the first couple of miles of this ~6 mile loop hike. The hike will take you past the remnants of a day when this part of the Highlands was intensively farmed and then up the slope of Round Hill for a two mile long ridge walk culminating in a spectacular vista before the gentle descent back to where you began. A full description of this hike can be found here. Other hikes and open spaces can be found at the Outdoor Recreation page at PlanPutnam. [...]
