(Back to Beck again). His rally this weekend in Washington is intended to “Restore honor” to America. Here’s a word of advice: if you want to restore honor, feed a hungry person, teach a child to read, employ the unemployed, house the homeless and heal the sick and do so selflessly. That’s what we’ll be judged on, not how many flags we fly, speeches we make or countries we bomb. . . . → Read More: News That Matters – Friday, August 27, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

My question about these things is always the same: why not put the effort into cleaning up the stormwater and septic problems that are causing all this vegetation to grow and solve the problem once and for all? Perhaps in the future, before DEC allows application of herbicides, they require that it be part of a larger program that will lead to that application being the final step in an overall process? Otherwise, we find ourselves repeating the same steps over and again and never really solving the problem at the base. . . . → Read More: News That Matters – April 30, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

2009 will be remembered for a lot of things but mostly for the overt racism that exploded across the nation with the inauguration of the US’s first Black president. Along with the racism came a resurgence in anti-intellectualism. “Tea Baggers” and “Birthers” don’t seem to understand the difference between political philosophies and equate Communism and Socialism and Fascism, conflating them all into as single philosophy. This either reflects our national education system or… I don’t know what. But when the likes of Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and the Aile’s and Gannett and Murdock empires are doing the educating the outcome has been, as we’ve seen, deleterious to the social, moral and political health of our nation. I don’t know what the solution is but when we raise a generation of children as the one pictured below, we need to stop what we’re doing and take a hard look at ourselves. Have we made the sacrifices necessary to maintain and protect the Constitution? Have we worked hard enough to counter the lies and misinformation that passes as news? Have we looked beyond political loyalties and placed our faith in our communities instead? When we can answer those questions with honesty and altruism we may begin to repair the damage done our nation this past decade. But you have to act and you have to act now. . . . → Read More: News That Matters – December 30, 2009 – Last Word of the Year Edition

Good Friday Morning,
The weather report was something along the lines of gusty windy, driving rains, falling trees and power lines. Instead, it has gently snowed and snowed enough that I was throwing snowballs last night. It’s still snowing outside this morning.
