Ornamental Holiday Decorations

Sonia Uyterhoeven is Gardener for Public Education. Let’s look at simple ways to dress up our homes for those of us who have great aspirations and little time. Around the holiday times we like to brighten up our homes with flowers. If you buy a nice bouquet of roses you can gussy them up for [...] [...]

News That Matters – September 4, 2009 – Things To Do Edition

While the elections are generally calm in most of our towns it’s not so over in Southeast where the vitriol continues unabated as the days move on towards the primary a week from next Tuesday. Really now, if I lived in that town I’d be embarrassed. Southeast replaced Kent several years back as the Town That Rankles and I’m happy they’re working hard to keep that moniker. Keep it up, guys! [...]

“If Franz Kafka had started a business, he would have started Verizon.”

Good Monday Morning,

If you were around on Saturday, you’d have noticed that pretty much every shop and business was open and so the question is: who gets a holiday? The answer is white collar workers. The service industry (the vast majority of Americans) largely works on national holidays.

When I’m President, national holidays will be just that, National Holidays, and aside from emergency services, everyone will be off from work, malls will be closed, gas stations and convenience stores tidily shut… everything. It’s easy to plan a day ahead so quit complaining about not being able to get that last minute beer or ice. Oh, and election day will be a national holiday as well as it is in many other countries. I know, I know… we’re in a global economy but just try to reach someone in France or Germany during August. If they can shut down for a month and still be more productive than we are, surely we can [...]

News That Matters – December 24, 2008

Tomorrow is Christmas (as I’m sure most know) and next week is the New Year. Don’t assume that everyone you know has a place to go and someone to be with, no matter how ‘popular’ they may seem to you. Extend an invitation. Make room at the table. [...]

HowStuffWorks “How does the Hanukkah Menorah work?”

How does the Hanukkah Menorah work?

by Allison Klein

Klein, Allison. “How does the Hanukkah Menorah work?.” 29 October 2004. HowStuffWorks.com. 21 December 2008.

Every year, usually in mid- to late-December on the Western calendar, Kislev 25 on the Hebrew calendar, Jews around the world celebrate the holiday of Hanukkah. Also know as the Festival of Lights, the holiday remembers one particular instance of triumph over religious persecution, when the Jews were able to escape oppression at the hands of Antiochus, a Syrian king.

Hanukkah is an eight-night celebration, and the celebration includes lighting a candle in the Hanukiyah (in English-speaking countries this is often called a Menorah, which is the Hebrew word for a candelabra) on each day of the holiday.

In 167 B.C., the Syrian king Antiochus IV began to outlaw Jewish religious practices and forced Jews to adopt Greek rituals. His men took control of the Jews’ Holy Temple in Jerusalem, looted it and erected an idol of a Greek god there. One Jewish family, the Hasmoneans (led by Mattityahu and his five sons), decided to take a stand against the persecution. The Greek forces arrived in the town of Modiin, near Jerusalem. It was here [...]

News That Matters – December 19, 2008 – Things To Do Edition

Good Friday Morning,

It’s probably gonna snow. If the weather service report from this morning holds true, we’re looking at somewhere between 9 and 13 inches of snow by later tonight. This could cancel the Physical Services Committee meeting schedule for 1:30 this afternoon at Tilly Foster Farm. Check the County Leg Calendar for updates. If I get an email from the County saying the meeting is canceled I’ll post it right away otherwise I’ll see you there.

As of 8:30 this morning, Governor Paterson has not yet called to offer me the Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton. He may not want to upset Ms. Kennedy or Mr. Cuomo right before Christmas and I can understand his sensitivity to the issue, or he may be running a background check to make sure I’m kosher before he calls. I’m patient, but I am packing and thinking about buying a suit. I suppose I should start looking for an apartment in Georgetown, too. Just a small one-bedroom in a quiet building where I can keep a garden would be nice.

Congress is getting a pay raise this year and a bill to kill that went nowhere. In fact, [...]

News That Matters – December 12, 2008 – Things to do Edition

Good Friday Morning,

I, for one, am a tad disappointed that the temps weren’t 2 or 3 degrees cooler over the past 36 hours. Had they been, we’d be looking at almost 30″ of snow and man, that would have been great! But alas, a man’s dreams were dashed by the moderating forces of Mother Nature.

So far this month the NtM blogsite is averaging 85 reads a day. As I often say in this space, there’s a lot more there than appears here and you have the ability to comment, discuss and pontificate to your heart’s content. Head on over, sign up and post away!

As of this morning there are 12 shopping days until Christmas, 9 until Hanukkah and 10 until my 51st birthday. Hopefully you’ve been checking out the Holiday Shopping Guide for my, er, your gifts this year, keeping them to under $20 per person and buying nothing from China. Shopping for locally produced and crafted gifts gives not only to the recipient but also to your neighbors and helps make our region stronger financially. Shopping locally is the gift that keeps on giving and when the bills come in January, you [...]

Don’t worry, you can still donate after those 3 days are up. It’s just that {maybe} I’ll stop annoying you.

Good Friday Morning,

Before you head out to the malls this morning just make sure you’ve set aside a few shekels to keep News That Matters coming to your inbox each day.

To be honest, I know you’re not heading out to the malls. I know that. I have faith in our collective ability to resist temptation, buck the “spend ourselves into oblivion” mantra that assaults us day in and day out on the television and radio and makes up 70% of the column space in our daily newspapers. However…

PlanPutnam’s Annual Fund Drive: Day 8 <- Click Here Good Friday Morning,

There’s good news out there this morning. It looks like the insurgent members of the Patterson Town Board have seen the future and decided that come election day they’d like to be re-elected. In order to calm the storm they caused over the past few weeks they’ve decided to re-instate Rich Williams’ and Ted Kozlowski’s positions in the 2009 budget and cut their “in lieu of” health insurance payments from $7600 to $6000.

Wikio [...]
