News That Matters – Friday, December 17, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

To seek an example of power and influence we got to thinking; who might benefit from a particular candidate getting elected and decided to take a look at campaign contributions to Vincent Leibell to see how many donors either already had contracts with the county, were thanking the former Senator for his assistance in the past or who hoped to get contracts with the county should he become County Executive. News That Matters – Wednesday, November 24, 2010 – Things To Do Edition (And the News!)

Today, while you’re taking a break from setting the table for tomorrow or packing the diapers for the trip to the inlaws, call William Gorton the Acting Regional Director for NYSDOT Region 8 at 845 431-5750 and calmly explain your opposition. He may send you to someone else or say there’s nothing he can do and that’s fine: your call still matters. And if he gets 20 or so over the next week… ya never know! [...]

I want to thank the voters for electing Greg Ball to the State Senate. You’ve insured me two solid years of excellent comic material. It also gives me the opportunity to consider running for the Senate two years hence which would be a pip and oh, so much fun and, once the ‘baggers have shown they cannot govern the monster they’ve created, should be an easy win for almost anyone. [...]

News That Matters – Friday, October 8, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Back in September some Carmel youth had an altercation: one threw eggs at another and the eggee smashed the guy’s car with a baseball bat in retaliation. In my world that would have been the likely end of it. But the instigator went crying to the police and now this poor kid is facing felony charges. Here we have yet another example of society stepping into a battle between two people that will ultimately cost us all a great deal of money and destroy the life of an otherwise innocent kid. In our rush for the unobtainable, a perfect society, we never look forward to the results. [...]

News That Matters – Friday, October 1, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

While we’re talking about the Ballster, I had to remove a comment from the News That Matters website from one of his supporters named, “Kaplowitzgal” who, it was obvious, was not a gal nor a supporter of Mr. Kaplowitz. If this is the way Mr Ball is running his campaign, by storming his opponents press conferences and spamming websites, imagine what it will be like if he should actually win this election? What kind of sick, demented fans has this guy got? [...]

News That Matters – Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Hydraulic fracturing involves blasting underground rock with a high-pressure mixture of water, sand and chemicals. It has been used in more than 90 percent of 450,000 operating natural gas wells, mostly without incident. But environmental concerns have risen about huge deposits in miles below the earth’s surface, which would require more water and chemicals, increasing the risks. [...]

Politicians all over the valley are busily trying to find ways to grow service at Stewart Airport. And while that may be good for those of you who travel to Orlando or St. Louis, those living under the flight path will have a different take on the matter. Several years ago a coalition of citizen’s groups stopped plans to make Stewart the world’s largest air cargo facility which would have had flights into and out of the airport every 3 minutes, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Now we’re back to this. [...]

House to vote this week on Hinchey Hudson Valley NPS study bill

House to vote this week on Hinchey Hudson Valley NPS study bill

WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives this week will vote on legislation introduced by Congressman Maurice Hinchey that would authorize the National Park Service to conduct a study on whether the Hudson River Valley should become a unit of the National Park system.

“Passage of this bill and the subsequent study would position the Hudson River Valley to gain the full attention of the National Park Service for all of the significant and substantial historic contributions the region has made to the development of the United States as well as for the area's pristine natural beauty,” said Hinchey. “Such a designation would provide the Hudson River Valley with an elevated national stature and access to additional federal funding that otherwise would not be available.”

In order for the Hudson River Valley to become part of the National Park System, a congressionally-authorized NPS study must be conducted. Hinchey's legislation would authorize such a study from Fort Edward in Washington County down through Westchester County.

If the NPS's study finds that the Hudson River Valley would be a good fit as part of the National Park System then additional [...]
