Note to licensed contractors in Putnam County: That bi-annual tax you pay to the county for permission to work here is, for some of you, about to go up. Forget that the recession has decimated many of us financially, and that those fees are paying for a department from which we contractors earn no benefit. The county has decided that in order to educate you about new laws concerning phosphorus reduction they’re going to increase those fees to charge you for their as yet to be determined educational program. At least that’s where the legislative committee is now… stay tuned! . . . → Read More: News That Matters – Friday, August 6, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Tea Bagger’s, egged on by Sarah Palin, are increasingly pressuring the “Liberal” media. WHAT LIBERAL MEDIA IS SHE REFERRING TO? News That Matters? Because, folks, I’m it. She says there’s a ‘sickness and darkness’ about me but we’ve never even met and I know she’s not a subscriber. . . . → Read More: News That Matters – Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Come November 1st, a new state law will require that automobile drivers leave a “reasonable distance” between themselves and bicyclists on the roads when passing. And while this requires some drivers to start paying attention it also requires bicyclists to do the same. If you’re riding two feet inside the white line it’s virtually impossible for a driver to give you your three-feet else they’d be in oncoming traffic. So please, bear a little of the burden of mutual safety and move to the right when a car comes up behind you. Okay? Thanks. . . . → Read More: News That Matters – July 7, 2010

I wish there was a way I could genuinely let you know just how appreciated your support has been. It has gotten me through some rough times but more importantly, has provided the other 965 people, those who do not support us but who read every issue, with a reliable source of free information regarding Putnam County, New York. All they have to do is open their email reader or web browser and the information is there three times each week like clockwork. So, not only must I thank you but they should, too. I suppose if they’re reading – and acting on what they read – they appreciate your efforts. . . . → Read More: News That Matters – Wednesday, June 30, 2010

It was yet another “quite a week” for politics in Putnam County ending with a proposed resolution from the County legislature burying the Corporate Welfare gig they were planning for Paul Camarda and Patterson Crossing. (See, County Legislature Kills Corporate Welfare Try. Again.) 1st District Legislator Vinnie Tamagna took the brunt of it but then he was the point man and refused to let it die, finally using county letterhead to beg a plea as an insert in the Putnam County News and Reporter. . . . → Read More: News That Matters – Friday, June 25, 2010 – Things To Do Edition

Responses to the article, The 38 Billion Dollar Fee, have been tremendous. It’s something of a relief to know that so many of you *used* to do your banking with Bank of America for all the reasons outlined in the article – and more. . . . → Read More: News That Matters – Wednesday, June 16, 2010
