The county of Putnam shall provide for a credit for the value of work performed or financed by a property owner within the road or highway improvement district or districts or benefited area or areas for the work as described in section one this act [sic]. Agreement for the provision of such credit shall be set forth in a written instrument of understanding between Putnam County and the property owner and documented in some other permit, approve site plan or official finding issued by Putnam County or the town of Patterson. A note to Mayor Bloomberg: Early yesterday morning you said, “Terrorists who want to take our freedoms away from us focus on the symbol of those freedoms, and that’s New York City.” Mr. Mayor, the only terrorists who can take away our freedoms are ourselves. Osama bin Laden didn’t shred the US Constitution or write the USA PATRIOT Act, we did that all on our own. In the future, please cut the hyperbole and stay focused. Thanks. [...]
Ginny Nacerino, Patterson Town Councilwoman, said we all know what we want, but how do we get there. She also pointed out that she works for the Brewster school district and could not imagine how they could consolidate school administration offices given the very serious and hard work that she witnesses daily. [...]
Yeah, I’ve been away for a lot of reasons that only a few of you have asked about until a wonderful event, an 80th birthday party for longtime Kent resident Kathy Freston last Wednesday evening, when a number of people got on my case – and in my face – about not publishing News That Matters. And then over this past weekend I received a number of emails asking what’s happened. If you’ve written or called you know. If you haven’t, then you haven’t missed the column. [...]
Good Friday Morning,
Quick Poll Results:
In this unscientific poll with a margin of error exceeding 130%, we asked who your preference would be for County Executive. The names that appeared were either those who have been talked about or came in via your nominations and each voter saw them in a random order. Here are the results:
Jeff Green 43% Other (see below) 17% Vincent Leibell 13% Chris Leiberman 7% Dan Birmingham 7% Robert Bondi 7% Vincent Tamagna 7% Denis Sant 0% Tony Hay 0% Sheriff Donald Smith 0%
Under “Other”, each of the following received one vote: Sarah Casey (I think her mom voted for her), Pedro (who we know is Peter Hansen), Ken Harper, John Degnan and Sam Oliverio.
If the election were held today and only News That Matters readers voted, I’d be the dude on the top floor of the County Office Building for the next few years. I can see Messers. Camarda, Santucci and Lepler having a hard time swallowing that but it wouldn’t be so bad! A populist libertarian like myself is just what this county needs. More of the same old crap is what we don’t need. [...]
I understand that part of the reason for all this is that if I take money from you up-front and then walk away from the job you have a place to go (my bond which the county holds.) But along with that I have to pay the county a $250 fee every two years, which we won’t call a tax. Because it’s not a tax even though it disappears into the general fund. There are around 1200 license holders in the county meaning the program generates around $300,000 for the county each year. We’ll call it a protection racket but we won’t call it a tax even though, in the end it comes out of your pocket and goes into theirs. That’s not a tax. It’s something else. I’m sure of it. [...]
State Republicans are making a lot of noise blaming the Governor for everything from eczema to halitosis but they’ve not offered anything substantive as regards to cutting state spending. And why should they? If they can force the Governor to cut popular programs they can blame him for the loss of services. In other words, not only have they put the Governor between that proverbial rock and hard place but though they roar loudly in the forest they’re naught but cowardly lions. [...]

Good Friday Morning,
It was 34.3° here this morning and I could hear the jade plant and the orchids shivering outside. There is a call for rain later this afternoon and evening. Tomorrow is supposed to be windy and rainy for most of the day but you should still get outside. Along with the events listed below (and the many that I don’t even know about), if the weather does keep you in I still want you to get outside! To help with that, PBS has made their new series by Ken Burns on our National Parks available for free viewing at their website here. Use a fast ‘net connect.

Good Wednesday Morning,
There’s a lot here this morning so refill the coffee cup and make yourselves comfortable:
Several young friends of mine are either currently serving in the Marines or have recently left the service, including one who stayed here at my place for awhile getting his head straightened out a few years back. I’m especially proud of him and the progress he’s made with his life. It was in their direction my thoughts were sent on Memorial Day this year.
On A Personal Note: Someone, a woman, called my house yesterday and left a message about setting something up and that she’d be there a little late. I have a new phone and when I called in to get my messages on the cell the reception was bad and then I hit the DELETE button rather than the REPLAY button and well, I have no idea who called or what the full message was about. If you called, please call again. If you didn’t call, please disregard this message. If you called and you’re not on this list, whatever it is I was supposed to do is not going to get done and I apologize, publicly.
“If we were to wake up some morning and find that everyone was the same race, creed and color, we would find some other cause for prejudice by noon.” – George Aiken
Good Monday Morning,
Another stellar weekend is behind us now and I’m hoping everyone had a good a time as I did. For those who missed the bonfire on Friday night all I can say is that you missed out on a really sweet time. Live music, drumming, good people and a beautiful evening all came together to create a magical experience. Then there was Chris Blossy’s “Cinderella, The Green Musical” which played the Cultural Center on Lake Carmel for two packed houses of adults and very happy children and a rainy hike to Hawk Rock led by the Kent CAC. All in all, there was a lot of fun and interesting things to do in Putnam County and I’m hoping you all did more than sit around and watch TV! Got that garden in yet?
Patterson Crossing will not die. Lake Carmel folks are holding what they call an “update” this evening at the Community Center at 7:30PM. Write for more information.
Okay, I’m going [...]
