Former Commish: State parks need $1 billion cash infusion

Former State Parks Commissioner Carol Ash debuted in her new role as parks advocate on Thursday and called for a halt to staff and funding cuts for New York’s Parks that could possibly lead to closures. Ash’s new employer, Alliance for New York State P… [...]

New Yorkers flock to parks

Whether it was the early summer-like weather or the threat of closure or just that New Yorkers know a good thing when they see it, between April and June, attendance at state parks and historic sites climbed 11 percent. Nearly 13.3 million people visited New York’s 178 state parks and 35 historic sites, up from about 12 million during the same time last year. Attendance over the July 4 weekend also soared, with a 6 percent increase. There’s still a lot of summer left and plenty of time to get out and enjoy our wonderful state parks and historic sites. Minnewaska State Park Preserve master plan adopted

GARDINER – The State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission have adopted a master plan for Minnewaska State Park Preserve that includes strong natural resource protection measures and more avenues for recreation, including expansion of hiking, biking, equestrian and climbing opportunities.

The master plan outlines the parks department’s vision for potential capital improvements, operational enhancements and natural and cultural resource stewardship within the park for the next 10 to 15 years.

200 rally to save state parks

200 rally to save state parks

NEW PALTZ – A rally in New Paltz held Saturday afternoon in protest of the closure of state parks across New York, specifically Minnewaska, brought out nearly 200 concerned Hudson Valley residents.

Attendees heard from numerous local representatives and were then treated to an afternoon of music and culture.

According to Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, there are 90 state park facilities that are at risk for closure or a significant reduction in services and about 50 Department of Environmental Conservation sites that could possibly share the same fate.

“These parks are treasures,” he said before singling out Minnewaska State Park. “This is an amazingly important tourist attraction for this area.”

“Closing these parks would have a negative effect on the economy here,” said Congressman Maurice Hinchey.

“Our analysis makes it very clear that for every dollar that is spent to maintain these national parks more than five dollars is generated to promote the economy and economic growth.”

News That Matters – February 24, 2010

Rental unit occupancy rates are down as are rents as fewer are able to afford the high cost of local residency. Brewster has so many apartments for rent they don’t know what to do and the homeless population is rising across the nation as people are forced out of their homes and apartments for their inability to cover their monthly payments. The national suicide rate has also steadily increased as people find themselves buried under a growing mountain of debt – not from credit cards mind you, but from the day-to-day bills that can no longer being met and who see no light at the end of the tunnel. [...]

News That Matters – February 22, 2010

We pause here to wish a speedy recovery to a Kent neighbor from Farmer’s Mills Road who surprised two burglars in his home last week and and was found badly beaten and semi-conscious several hours later by coworkers wondering why he’d not come back from lunch. He’s currently in hospital but late reports say that the police have been able to interview him. Let’s hope the guys get caught soon. [...]

NtM – April 6, 2009

“And we’re so by God stubborn we could stand touchin’ noses for a week at a time and never see eye-to-eye.”

Good Monday Morning,

It looks like Carmel Councilman Norman Marino and Carmel’s Assessor, Paul Jonke are going at it. According to published reports, Councilman Marino, who has been trying to have the assessment on his home lowered, has taken to a bit of what Jonke construes as harassment, following Mr. Jonke around town and just generally being a pain in the butt. To that end, Mr. Jonke signed an official complaint against Marino on March 17th. Yikes! I thought I was reading about Southeast for a moment.

New York’s newest State Park is taking shape just a few miles north of us. It’s not a place where wildflowers bloom or where bear find caves for their winter slumber. There aren’t even any trees or grasses. But that’s not what makes it unique. What does is that it sits 212 feet over the Hudson River stretching in a thin, 3094 foot long line between Poughkeepsie and Highland and come this October will connect those two towns for the first time since 1974. It’s called Walkway Over The [...]
