Let’s be honest: it’s a crappy day. You could stay at home and veg, bemoaning the weather and watch re-runs of F Troop and I Love Lucy or you could go to the mall and run up your credit card debt or you could finally get to cleaning out the basement. So, since those options are not really options, get your butts off the couch and get yourselves to the old firehouse on Route 52 (just south of the Route 311 causeway) and see some live theater. Good Monday Morning,
Arts on the Lake held a golf outing and fundraiser at Sedgewood last Friday and it was a wonderful event. About 100 people gathered at a private home at the club and pretty much anyone who was anyone was there. There was a good showing by members of the Kent PD, Supervisor Doherty was there. Other residents of the Sedgewood club and local residents also came out. Thanks go to Liz Allison and Ellen Leerburger for manning the reception table, to Midhat Serbagi, Michelle LeBlanc, Pat Cummings, Bob Bradley’s Barbershop Quartet and Lora Lee Ecobelli for providing the atmosphere and to the residents who opened their home and to everyone who attended and especially to Arts on the Lake for being, well, Arts on the Lake!
Walkway Over The Hudson After the fundraiser at Sedgewood I ran up to Waryas park in Poughkeepsie to attend opening ceremonies for New York’s newest – and most unique – State Park, Walkway Over the Hudson. The event was part of the ongoing celebration of the Hudson River and served as the Main Event for the Quadricentennial itself.

Good Friday Morning,
Why was it dark and 43° this morning when I woke up? What’s with that?
Someone tell Joe Lindsley that, as promised, I bought a copy of his paper yesterday.
Rush Limbaugh called for segregated public buses. Huh.
There was no News That Matters on Wednesday this week as I was recovering from the primary elections the day before and being on-the-go for 16 hours straight is draining. The race I was in is still up in the air as the write-in and absentee ballots will not be counted until next Tuesday, but I go into the general election on two lines in any case.
There were a number of upsets and surprises and even at that, reports say that many of the races assumed won or lost may change come the final tally so we’re all just sitting back and waiting until then. And let me tell you – it’s quite nerve-wracking.
There were three Big Races: one for Sheriff, the judges’ race in Kent and the Republican primary for town council in Southeast.
All three races were hotly contested with accusations and mud being slung from all corners. Here in Kent I had to [...]
Peter Collins and Maureen Fleming have a few things in common. For one, they’re both qualified attorneys with long standing practices. For another, they’re both running for Town Justice in the Town of Kent in primaries for the Democratic, Independence and Working Families party lines. While a few misanthropic Republican candidates have gone negative even before the primary, others (we do not know their party affiliations) are going negative on Collins and Fleming. In the former case it’s a letter to the Courier about mythical and magical situations which never transpired and passed on as facts and a widely mailed attack piece on Judge Collins. In the latter case, it’s missing and damaged campaign signs. Some cut in half. Others destroyed. Some missing entirely. [...]
Jazz and history, quite an unlikely pair but Michelle LeBlanc does not think so. Michelle LeBlanc, a jazz vocalist, history buff and Putnam Valley resident performs songs from her new CD, “I Remember You.” At Arts on the Lake at the Lake Carmel Cultural Center, 640 Route 52 Kent, NY, Friday September 11, 2009 at 8:00pm. Michelle LeBlanc has been performing in Hudson Valley jazz club and concert stages since the early 1990′s. She is a popular bandleader, bringing great jazz musicians together to provide entertainment for clubs, concerts and private events.. Michelle has worked with many Hudson Valley jazz greats including Bill Crow, Ed Xiques, Tom Kohl, Ron Vincent, Jeff Tillman, David Amram, Steve Lamattina, Bill Conway, David Jones, Joe Stelluti, Calloway Brooks, Joe Puma and Carmen Leggio. Inn for tourists being discussed for downtown Carmel Robert Marchant rmarchan@lohud.com
Tony Porto Jr. gets calls all the time: ”How can I get a room at the inn?”
Alas, said Porto, there is no room at Smalley’s Inn in Carmel. The place where three generations of his family have worked since the 1960s is a family restaurant, with no hotel accommodations. But Porto said the time has come for a more creative approach, and he is looking to remake and restore the Carmel landmark with a historic flavor, and he wants to challenge business and government leaders to do more to make the hamlet an attractive destination for visitors.
“We need business here,” Porto said. “And it could bring something back to the town.”
Porto has met with a number of Putnam County officials, who are helping to find funding that may be available for the kind of historic restoration and economic development projects Porto is considering.

Winter is coming on believe it or not and now is the time to begin weatherizing your home against the cold and to protect your pocketbook from what should be pretty expensive heating costs. Over the next few weeks I’ll be including some common-sense tips on what you should be doing now to get your place in shape. But one important and often over looked project is to refinish the outside of your home. Believe it or not, a good house painter will take the time to secure the outside of your home, re-caulk windows and doors and tighten up the external structure. If you’re living in an older home an investment in a good exterior paint job could save you money this winter. [...]

Good Friday Morning,
The League of Women Voters hosted a candidate’s forum in Kent last evening at which I was on the panel and all I can say is that it was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done. It’s not the same being on that side of the table as it is on the other!
Everyone was pretty chill until the closing statements when John Greene (yes, if you can believe the surname mashup that I still consider intentional,) got a little testy properly raising the ire of councilman Lou Tartaro who seems to be specifically targeted for removal from the board by various forces. While Lou and I are in direct competition for the board seat he currently occupies I’m not running against him – I’m running FOR the seat – there is a difference. But John seems to have Lou and Supervisor Doherty in his gunsights, and to a lesser extent Republican candidate Tom Maxson, and has for the past few months. There was a cameraman from the North County News present [...]
PlanPutnam: Now in our tenth year!
“I think society puts young people in a box — people 15, 16, 17 — and does not expect them to do much but go to high school and play football and stuff like that. This just shows they can do a lot more with some strong ambition and desire. My [advice] is to get out there and do your thing with all you got.” - 17 year old Zack Sunderland, the youngest to ever to sail around the globe – solo.
Good Monday Morning,
This issue of News That Matters begins the 10th year of PlanPutnam!
As of this morning we have near 500 readers who receive NtM directly by email and another several hundred who read it online each day. As the column is posted on several blog sites and is picked up by Google and other web crawlers, I have no idea how many others are reading. And, while this column is certainly not the most read media source in the county it has become the most influential and for that you should all be proud. You don’t know how many times I’ll be talking to [...]
